STATU Jtl'IMMNti KAIIJIOAI). SAN ANTONIO, Tex., Sept. 10. A practical experiment In railroad eotiHtructlon and operation haB heen undertaken by the Btate of Texas. The state Is building a line of railway from Palestine to the penitentiary at Hunk. About 15 miles of the track has been completed, and work on the remaining 14 miles is being rapidly pUHhed. The state officials say they expect to learn by actual construction and operation the Immediate cost of railway building and running, and that public Information so obtained with JuKKlIng bookkeeping will be a basis of argument for future railroad rutes. The fact that the state oper ates Iron works at Husk gives a fin ancial reason for this government ownership of a railroad. Dr. Finn's Tiw(liiioiiy IntereHflng. HMmI uvuer fur Mntr rbft THE CHILDREN Tht Ermina and tht Ptarmigan, Most children have all beard per jap's of the queer way In which the little animal called the ermine changes 1U coat according to the season, being pure white In winter, but a reddish brown to summer. This change la what naturalists cull protective coloration that la to say, It is white In winter be cause ltu surroundings are white, being covered with snow, and It U brown in summer because Its surroundings are then brown, aud, being the color of Its surroundings, It can more easily hide Itself from Its enemies. There are many similar c-OBes lu nature, one of which a naturalist recently called spe cial atteut Ion to that of the bird called the ptarmigan. It puts on a white dress In winter, but by a seem ing Inconsistency It then bus a bluck tall. Now, oue would think that Its black tall n:!d prevent Its hiding It self lo a snow field, but Bee bow beau tifully nature works. When the bird crouches on the snow. It looks like a little lump such as may be seen In ev ery buow field, but It must be remem bered that every snow hump casts a dark shadow, and the bird's black tall imitates that shadow. My Housfl, Your Houu. The players sit around a table, In the middle of which Is a circle about live Inches iu diameter. The circle muy be drawn with chalk or made of paper. A Blip notiae Is made at oue end of a cord about a yard long, aud the other end Is tied to a cane.' One of the play ers holds the cane, uud the slip noose Is laid around the chalk circle. When ho suys "My house" each of the other pluyers must touch the tip of the fore finger to the table Inside the circle, und wheu he Buys "Your house" each must withdraw his linger und place It on the table lu front of him. The coin mauds MMy house." "Yotir house," may be repented us fast as the speaker pleases and' In any order be may choose. Any one who does not put his finger In the circle at the com maud "My bouse' or who takes It out except at thvj command "Your bouse" must pay o forfeit When the player with the cane says "Your house" he Is allowed to tighten the uoose quickly, trying to catch any fingers that remain In the circle. If he Bucceeds the person whose linger Is cuught must take the cane, aud the game goes on. Dog and Kitten. A corresi Hudent Bends to the Loudon Spec tutor the following anecdote; The Bervaut man of a family took a kitten to a poud with the Intention of drowning It. The master's dog went with blm, and when the kitten was thrown Into the water the dog sprung lu und brought It back to laud. A second time the man threw It lu, und ugulu the dug rescued It, and when for the third time the servant tried to drown It the dog, us resolute to suve the little life ns the mun wus lo de stroy It, swum with It to the other side of the pool, ran all the way home with It und deposited It before the kitchen fire. From that time the dog l.ept constant watch over the kltteu. The two were Inseparable, even sharing the Bame bed. A Russian Game. Swayku Is u game played wi6 an (run plu eight or nine Inches long und any number of Iron rings, vurylug In diameter from two Inches to oue foot The pin, which 1b culled the swuyku (Its nume Is Uussluu) Is bo sharp that It will stick upright when thrown ei ther nt the ground or a board floor. The rings are tossed on the ground In any order, and the players try to throw the swuyka bo that It will stick upright within oue of them. The ob ject Is to place it In each one of the rings In order. Game may lw counted by fixing upou n number of Klnts for each rlugk according to Its she. The smaller rings, being more difficult, should count the highest. Any num ber agreed upon could be the limit for a game. A Homimsda Harp. Take a piece of wood six and a half Inches long aud two Inches wide and cut five little silts at each end. Then take a piece of wood oue and three quarters Inches long and a half Inch high. Huy a long piece of rubber, take oue etui of the rubber, pull It Into oue of the silts and when you see that you have enough to stretch from one of the Bllts to tSe other then cut It and fastou the other end Id the opposite silt. Make and adjust four more of these pieces aud then take the small piece of wood and put It under the strings and you'll hare your harp. FACTS FROM THfi LIFE OF MAS. The Humorist's View of It. Man that Is born of his parents 1b of few days and full of microbes. He goetb to school when a youngster and geteth the elbow of his pants paddled for something that he did not do until be Is sick at heart. He groweth up like a Chinese thistle In the back yard aud soon reaches the age when he Is composed to a large extent of feet, freckles and an appetite for pie. About the time he gets too long for short trousers and too short still for long ones, he goeth away to a college, learneth to monkey with a $3 mandolin and to play at whiskey poker. He cometh home a bigger fool than when he went away and marrieth a sweet young thing whose pa is supposed to be wealthy hut I whom he subsequently ascertained couldn't buy a prize rooBter at a county fair. He worrleth along from . year to year, gradually acquiring off springs and debts until the former; resembles a Sunday school class just t before Christmas, and the latter like the assets of a bankrupt. He fret- j awake nights trying to figure out i how to keep himself and dependent population out of the poorhouse. Ef forts are rewarded by having his daughters run away and get married and bring him home another son-in-law every few days to feast at his board. His sons grow up and call him governor and set him back a five spot every day or two. About the time he has acquired enough to make It worth while for his heirs to quar rel over, he becomes oxaluriated and is hustled off before he has bad time to talk with his faniHy. His sons blow n his estate on bad whiskey and plug hats and his wife outs on the finishing touches to his career by marrying the hired man and cut ting a wide swath with his insurance money. Verily, the way of the transgressor Is hard and his first name 1b man. Ex. NOTICE TO ROSKHUIttt TEA CH ICKS.
