The Eugene - Oo.rd. of Aug. 7 gava to following splendid tribute to tbe memory of the late Mr. E Wlmberiy, of Roseburg. with. whom Editor Chaa. H. Fisher, of the Guard, had for minjr years beew personally acquainted. He aaya: "Newa waa received by Tbe Guard Ihla morning of tbe death at Rose burg, of Enoch Wlmberiy, one .of tbe oldest aod moat respected pioneers of Douglas county, after a lingering Illness covering many months. The deceaaed leaves a widow and tbe fol lowing sons and daughters: Ira Wlmberiy, a merchant of JJraln; L. Wlmberiy, publisher and proprietor of the How-burg Review; Mrs. t'bas. Clevenger, of Granta Pass, and El mer and Elva Wlmberiy, Roseburg all highly respected In tbe commun ities In wblcb they reside. air. Wlmberly'a long life, largely spent In Douglas county, gained him Inn universal esteem of his .neign bora and those with whom he came In contact In the affairs of an active life that waa stamped with the vir lues of sterling integrity and pioneet simplicity. His death calls alien lion once more to tbe rapid thinning of the ranks of the sturdy first set tiers In Oregon, the men and women who. In tbe days fraught with dan ger and hardship: founded hornet and reared families to follow lt their footsteps and take up theli work where the Infirmities of agf compelled tbem to lay It aside. Pos albly It waa tbe "call of the wild' that attracted the pioneers to tb wilderness over half a century ago and that they "builded better thai tbey knew," but we of tbe youngei generation, who have an opportunity to view the work they did. and wb cherish the memory of their virtues feel that something of a prophet!, sense drew them on; that tbe vole) of the wilderness, mountain ani' trackless stream whlapered of an em plre that was to be and called then to a work that demanded only stou' hearts and true manhood and wo manhood. Of all these honored pioneers who have passed beyond none has the' memory of a hlghe character as a clttren and a neighbor husband and father, than Enocl Wlmberiy." YONCALLA SEWS.
