Primaries of ail parties to noaiinata; state tickets, are being held throughout Missouri today. Keports received from many points state that a heavy vote la be ing, cast. The principal contest Is . over .the 1 democratic gubernatorial nomination, Oovernor Joseph Folk having retired from the field to make the-- race for United States senator, against Senator Stone. William 8. Cowherd, of Kansas City, and David A. Ball, of Pike county, are the prin cipal contenders for the governor- . ' ship. Unprejudiced observers declare that Cowberd apparently enters to day's primary in the lead In popular favor, although It Is admitted that the race will be close. -The , republican nomination fo governor will undoubtly go to Her bert 8. Hadley, who has made a bril liant record as attorney general of Missouri. Republican leaders assert that they have a good chance of sue cess In the November election, and that with- Hadley as their standard - bearer they will give the democrats the hottest race they have evei known . William S. Cowherd, who Is appar ently the favorite In the democrats gubernatorial race. Is a native of Mis .- sourl and a graduate of tho Unlver slty of Missouri. Ho has served oik term as mayor of Kansas City and has repreaented his district In con gresg for four consecutive ternir. "Dave" Ball, tho man from Plki county, who Is Cowherd's rival foi . the nomination, also has a long po lllical record to his credit. Con . gressman "Champ" Clark has sup ported Ball and this has added t his strength. This Is the first test of the net atate prUnary law In Missouri, undei - which the Btate nominating conven tlon Is a thing of the past. Unde the law, however, conventions of tin nominees of all parties must be hob In Jefferson City a month from today September 4, to formulate the usua . state platforms. Although the senatorial fight doe: . not enter Into today's primaries, th friction between the supiiorterB o 8enator "Hum Shoe Bill" Stone nnc Oovernor Folk has added Interest ti the contest. Although the nnmlna tlon for United States senator wll not be made until the general elec tlon In November, a virulent warfar Is already In progress. The oil charges of bribery against Stone an being revived, In connection with tin famous statement of a well-knowi railroad lobbyist who declared Urn "We both suck eggs, but Stone bidet the shells." Kansas' First Primary. TOPEKA, Kan., Aug. 4. Whethe Chester 1. Long, of Medicine Lodge . senior United States senator from Kansas, will be returned, or will bi succeeded by Joseph I.. Ilrlstow of Banns, country editor, forme . fourth assistant postmaster genera and foe of railroad and corporatlm, dominance In political affairs, wll be decided by a primary today In wutcn tne republican voters of Kan saa are expressing their aoverelKt will, 'this Is the first primary elec tion ever neiu in Kansas. Democrats, prohibitionists ami So ciallsta are also taking part in to nay a primary and all parties wl nominate, In addition to seualiirlii candidates, a full slate ticket. tiugn r. Farrelly. of Chanutc. wil be given the democratic nomliiuiiuii for United Stntes senator, but tlx democrats have little hope of victory and the choice apparently lies be tween Long and Hristow, the r"puhll can aspirants. Cyrus Leland, Jr.. of Troy, and W R. Stubbs, of Lawrence, are tho 0 O. P. contestants for the guheriinlor lal nomluatloii. W. H. Ilyan, rtt (lir ard; Jeremiah D. Ilotkln. or Win field, and Russell J. Harrison, of Sel den, are each seeking to head th democratic stuto ticket. George K lllbner, of Concordia, is unopposed as the Socialist gubernatorial noin Inee. while Alfred Hope, of Ahi'en. Is hopeful of securing the empty hon or of prohibition nominee for govern or of a prohibition state. The Lang-llrlstow senatorial fight Is the center of Interest In tndav't. primary, since It affords the voters their first opportunity to select i senator. The fight on fxing hna been mud on the allegation that he is "railroad senator" and that he belongs to tli.it corporation-controlled clique of th. senate which also Includes Aldrlih Allison, Elklus, Hopkins and Pen rose. Ixing began his political career 23 years ago. at the age of 26. He built up a district machine which was a .seven-year wonder, and which en abled him In 1892, to defeat Con gressman Jerry Simpson, the gifted Jeader of the tWn triumphant but tiow moribund Populist movement n llf Simpson defeated him, but two years later Long was ngain iuc cessful aad ihe wieklesw statesman retired from ihe pjltikil arena. Id 1903 Long was promoted to a seat io (the senate, which be has but indiffer- 'ently represented lb progressive i spirit of the Sunflower state. I Ji.-fph Bristow lit the candidate of I the reform element of the republi can party of Kansas. althouKh he has I held political offices and has for years been a force in Kansas repub- I ticaniBm. As fourth assistant postmaster general. Hristow made an enviable record, ferreting out many sources of graft and corruption in the nation al postal department and exposing the malefactors to punishment. He also acquired considerable fame a an investigator of affairs In Panama In state affairs, he has always con sistently opposed railroad domina tlon and has been one of the prin clpal foes of the lobbyists.
