CONTAINS INGLES HAS HAD DAY. Sustains Assault und Loses his Fuse Against A. T. Thompson. " Tills was a hard day on L. . Ingles, tho star witness for the state in the Sunday closing law cnse&, lie was assaulted by Efl. Jenningb und A. T. Thompson, two local bus'ness men, whom he had arrested to- vp-- latlng the Sunday law. and n few- hours later a jury In Recorder Oi cutfs court acquitted Thompson of 'disturbing the peace and quiet of the city" In hnvlng called Ingles the vilest name that can be applied to a human being, 1 Previous to the ns sault, however, Thompson plead guilty In Justice Long's court to Sun day law violation and paid a fine of $;. Jennings case will probably be called tomorrow. Ho is also under uhnrgo of referring to Ingles' pa rem- i age in Inelegant language, and will be tried on this, If at nil, upon the return of his lawyer. W. W. Ciud well, who has been called to Crejce-it City, Calif., on a land ease. Tiie assnult on Ingles oce-.irred (ust before the opening of Rueorde Orcutt's court about 11 o'clock this morning. Without tho formality of words, Jennings, In company wll'i Thompson, approached him, and struck htm twice In the face knock ing him down. As soon ns Ingles arose he was attacked by Thompson tnd would doubtless have fared b .id ly had not bystanders Interfered. Ingles sustained a slight injury to his npner Hp, but beyond this he was un iu't. District Allorney Hrown states bai he will investigate the enso be 'ore the grand Jury, lie says the use is more than nu ordinary one Ix't-ause of the fact that Ingles was n uosecutlng witness in a slate case ind that allegations have been made that the assault was preceded- by th rents. In his trial on the profanity charge his aflernoon. Thompson was rep resented by Ally. W. W. Cnrdwell. wlille the city'B interests were look d alter by Atty, F. G. Mlcelll. Roth awyers made the strongest possible arguments on their cases. Tho Jury was composed of G, A. Rlgualnes, A. T. Hestul, J. P. McKay, G. S. Clayton, D. L. Martin and J. O. New laud. M took these men )ust six minutes to reach a verdict, of not lilly. The trial created Intense in terest, and the court room was rrowded. The principal point of the lefense. while admitting that Thomp- on called Ingtes the vile nnmn al eged, was that "Ihe peace and quiel if the city" hail not been disturbed hereby. A farclal aspect was given io tlie ease by we vera 1 local citizens testifying (hat they knew Inglea by no other name tbnn that which Thompson had called him. In view of Thompson's acquittal, It Is doubt ful If Jennings' case will be called for trial. ('OMMIONCINU .HMO i!m, tllllH. The following train servico will be In effect on Iho line of the C. & K.
