: PRIMARY ELECTIONS.
Urine Held in State, of Missouri end
K annas.
ST. LOUIS, Aug. 4. Primaries of
ail parties to noaiinata; state tickets,
are being held throughout Missouri
today. Keports received from many
points state that a heavy vote la be
ing, cast. The principal contest Is
. over .the 1 democratic gubernatorial
nomination, Oovernor Joseph Folk
having retired from the field to make
the-- race for United States senator,
against Senator Stone. William 8.
Cowherd, of Kansas City, and David
A. Ball, of Pike county, are the prin
cipal contenders for the governor-
. ' ship.
Unprejudiced observers declare
that Cowberd apparently enters to
day's primary in the lead In popular
favor, although It Is admitted that
the race will be close.
-The , republican nomination fo
governor will undoubtly go to Her
bert 8. Hadley, who has made a bril
liant record as attorney general of
Missouri. Republican leaders assert
that they have a good chance of sue
cess In the November election, and
that with- Hadley as their standard
- bearer they will give the democrats
the hottest race they have evei
known .
William S. Cowherd, who Is appar
ently the favorite In the democrats
gubernatorial race. Is a native of Mis
.- sourl and a graduate of tho Unlver
slty of Missouri. Ho has served oik
term as mayor of Kansas City and
has repreaented his district In con
gresg for four consecutive ternir.
"Dave" Ball, tho man from Plki
county, who Is Cowherd's rival foi
. the nomination, also has a long po
lllical record to his credit. Con
. gressman "Champ" Clark has sup
ported Ball and this has added t
his strength.
This Is the first test of the net

Although the senatorial fight doe:

friction between the supiiorterB o

Oovernor Folk has added Interest ti
the contest. Although the nnmlna

candidates, a full slate ticket.
tiugn r. Farrelly. of Chanutc. wil
be given the democratic nomliiuiiuii
for United Stntes senator, but tlx
democrats have little hope of victory
and the choice apparently lies be
tween Long and Hristow, the r"puhll

Cyrus Leland, Jr.. of Troy, and W
R. Stubbs, of Lawrence, are tho 0
O. P. contestants for the guheriinlor
lal nomluatloii. W. H. Ilyan, rtt (lir
