"Among other things, ttottazzi put Into the cabinet a small table weigh ing about flftten pountlK," says Ham lin, In describing the experiment of great Italian scientists In the August Everybody's, "and on top of It ar ranged a hulr-bruah, a hen's feather, a bottle full of water, and a very thick glnsfl. These articles and the table were the only objects that could oe moved. Well, while the medium was before the curtain and fully guarded, that little table came out of the cabinet of Its own accord In a light that made It perfectly vis ible Hut that 1b not the most re markable thins. The pychlc8 feet were held by the engineer, and he ob served that at the exact momenl when Paladlno pushed against hi knee, the tnble moved. Dr. Richard Cabot, In an article In the August McClure's analyzes one hundred "Christian Science Cures." He does not discuss them from the I point of view of logic or consistency. I but by a study of the written test)-! monlnls and of his own experience, j gained In the attempt to verify Hk1 claims of those who pronounce them-1 selves cured. Bumming up. he says: "My conclusions are, first, thnt most Christian Science cures nre probably genuine; but, second, thnt they are not the cures of organic diseases. "In my own personal researches Into Christian Science 'cures.' I hav nover found one In which there was any good evidence that cancer, con sumption, or any other organic dis ease had boon arrested or banished. The diagnosis was usually either made by the patient himself or wan an Interpretation at second or third hand of what a doctor was supposed to have Bald. "As I have followed up the re ported cures of cancer and other ma lignant tumors, I have found either thnt they were not tumors at all. or that they were assumed to be maltg- nant without any microscopic exam ination. In other words, the diagno sis was never based upon any proper eviaence. Prohibition HyHfcrlii. In discussing the prohibition ques tion In the August McClure's, Prof. Hugo Munsterberg says: "It has been seldom Indeed thnt the fundamental evil of American public opinion has como out so clear ly; namely, that no one dares to he on tho unpopular side; Just as In Now is the time to list your Farms, Orchards, Stock Ranches, Timber Lands and City Property. Only the cranks come out with an unbalanced, exaggerated op position, and thus reully help lh cause they want to fl'ht aKainat. Tin wefl-lmlanccd thinkers keep quiet and simply look ou while the move ment rushes forward, waiting quiet ly for the reaction which sets In from the Inner absurdit y of every soclul extreme. The result Ik too often an hysterical zig-zag movement, where fearlesitness might have found a middle way of steady progress. There must be indeed a possible middle way between the evil of the present atoon and the not lessor evil of a future national prohibition; yet. If this one-sldednesB of discussion goes on. It Is not difficult to foresee, after the legislative experiences of the lout vear, that the hysterical movement will not stop until prohibition is pro ?lalmed from every state-house be tween the Atlantic and the Pacific. McKinley n Free Silver .Man. "The Intepreter," writing on poli tics In the August American .Maga zine, tela a number of unpublished stories about Roosevelt, McKinley. Parker. Cleveland, Croker, Whitney und other famous politicians concern ed In presidential elections. Of party principles and of McKln ley's anxiety In 18f6 he says: "The late Mr. McKinley was nomi nated on a platform ndocatlug the single gold standard, although lit was a bimetallst with a record of fa voring the free coinage of silver. I'p to the very moment when the com mittee on resolutions submltti-d Us report he protested against the pro posed currency plank. Ho talked very earnestly over the telephone 'rom Canton, and gave his friends to believe that a declaration for the ilngle standard would be dangerous. His spokesman, General Orosvenor, told everybody who would listen to him that It would mean the loss of Ohio. Even Mark Hanna was not uire of the wisdom of the policy, ilut when tho supporters of the gold itnndard made their point. Mr. Mc Klnley accepted the nomination with ?reat cheerfulness. Itcpublicnii .Mncliiiie D.-W il. In the August American Magazine Victor Murdock, representative In congress from the Kighth KanuaH dis frict, describes "A Congressman's First Speech." It in an amusing and iit the same time serious account of the imags a country congressman runs into when he encounters frigid Washington. It Is really a terrible indictment of the republican machine that rules the House of Represent atives. William Allen White Introduces Congressman Murdock to the readers of the American Magazine In the fol lowing paragraphs: "Victor Murdock went to Congress in his early thirties, five years ago, determined to be a free man. His first public act of any Importance was to bring to the attention of con gress tho fact that the American rail roads were Betting five million dol lars a year from the government by a false system of railroad mall weighing. Congress refuRed to act. Murdock, who was refused the right to a vote on the subject, appealed from the decision of the chair to the House; he' was the only republican who stood up to be counted. The steal--which was open and palpable was so gross that the president, af fer waiting in vain for congress to ict on Murdock's proposition, a'jcI ished the rule under which the steal was made the day thnt congress ad Cut Glass and Silverware r, There Have never before been offereu such extraordinary bargains In irenuluo LUT GLASS, All pieces are best quality clear glass only a few nieces of a kind. - ...... Murdock thus Incurred the enmity of the house organization, but be found favor with the po.V. dent. Last spring Murdock led tl-e fight for a detailed consideration ut the postal appropriation bill In the house. He said in the course nf his speech : " 'This bill carries two hundred millions. There are twenty miiuite3 allowed for its analysis. That h de liberation at the rate of ten millions a minute.' Mr. Murdock then de nounced the extravagance of con gress In dealing with the railroad. " 'During the past thirty-four years,' he asserted, 'by reason of congressional blindness and depart mental silence we have paid the rail roads on miscalculations sixty mil lion dollars. Still congress refuses to adopt business methods In dealln? with the railroads.' "This angered the organization again. Murdock also stood against the 'organlzc Jon' in Its attempt to parrot the democratic minoritv. Three times the clerk called Mur dock's name when this rule came to a vote, and three times did Murdock the only republican reply '110. He could not be bulldozed, and when signatures were needed to a pet It lor to the republican caucus for anv in surgent movement. Murdock's name always went down. As a result he has no republican opposition for nomination tills year, and It 1b now reasonably certain that the demo crats will not put up n nian against him.
