Castro Defies Whole American Army and Navy. Caracas, Venezuela, April 12. "President Castro will not withdraw the New York & Berrnudez Asphalt Company case from Venezuelan courts and will not submit the Olcott case to arbitration If the whole American army and navy come to Venezuela." This emphatic statement of the Veno. zuelan Secretary of Foreign Affairs, rellects the spirit of the reply which C!aatro made to the recent proposal of the American State Department for the arbitration of tho Bcrmudez and Olcott , It wob generally rumored through out Venezuela that the demand of the United States was little less than an ultimatum to General Castro and the reply of the Venezuelan President ras awaited with interest. Nearly two weeks have passed since Castro , mado this reply and, as no action has been taken by the United States and 1 no further demands have been mi.de, J the last demand of the United States 4aa gone the way of many previous re quests for arbitration and the incident 1h practically closed us far as discussion in Caracas is concerned. Editor Review: Having visited the good people of Hubbard creek, I thought maybe a few words about that prosperlous locality would be of inter est. That valley was first settled some time in the '70's by three men who, at tracted by the line ceder timber, went there to manufacture shingles. One of those men, B. W. Spague, still lives there on a Que ranch, on which be raised the first crop of clover on the creek. He also has a fine orchard. W. B. Clorke will start his saw mill for tho spring run about the 12th of this month. He will cut about 400,000 feet of lumber this year. Churchill and Vun Dyke are bis loggers. They have secured a fino lot of good logs. Mr. F. M. 13 lack, who lived on Hub bard creek for a number of years, is a prosperous farmer. He raised a large family and seems to be enjoying life splendidly for a man of bis age. Mr. Black makes a success of raising onions and other gurden truck. Mr. B. B. Sutton is in the sheep raising business. He has a fine flock of sheep which be will commence to shear right away. He will have a sup perior crop of fine wool for which he has been offered a good price. Mr. Sutton has also a fine lot of lambs. The Gerinoud boys who are in the timber bus! nets, deal in boards, posts, stakes or any thing in the timber line. Charley Germond is our Deputy As sessor. He is the right man for the place, doing his work well and with out fear or favor. The Briggs mill has changed bands. It is now owned by Howard & Co., practical mill men. Tho mill is now in operation, sawing several thousund feet of line clear Inmber a day. This valley is a great fruit valley and strange to say the fruit posts have never appeared there. The lands are peculiarly adapted to the raising of tho finest (juulity of apples, samples of which will probably bo sent to the Lewis and Clark fair. The people of Hubbard creek are highly elated over the prospects of a railroad survey from Oakland to Coos Bay, through that valley. Thoy claim they have the shortest feasible route between tho points named by at least ,10 miles and the lowest pans through the Coos river ridge by BOO foot. Thoy have induced some capi talists to run a preliminary line through from Colos valley to tide water on Coos Bay. The proposed line will be run about the first of May. The people of Colos valley are ."all land scrip and place tho same on lard maps ol any township in Koseburc, mai!o and property in all respocta busy making gardens. Mr. Ramp's bop pack is in liae condition. The young vines are growing nicely and are at least three weeks ahead of their length as compared with correspond ing periods of former years. Horace Deardoff was over in this valley last week with his fine thorough bred horses. To say they were fine is putting it very mildly. Mr. Deardoff shows good judgment in getting the best that money can buy and deserves great credit for his energy and enter prise. He should be liberally patron ized as he is doing more than any other mun In this community to induce the farmers to raise better horses. We learn that Mr. Deardoff Intends to visit the valley once a week during tbe Beason. He is going to take his Ger man coach horse to the Portland fair. He;will make it very interesting for those who .compete with him for the prize. L. T. T. Cheated Death, Kidbey trouble often ends fatally, but by choosing the right medicine, E. II. Wolfe, of Bear Grove, Iowa, oheated death. He says: "Two years ago I had Kidney Trouble, which caused me great pain, suffering and anxiety, but I took Electric Bitters, which effected a complete cure. I have also found them of great benefit in general debility and nerve trouble, and keep them constant ly on hand, since, as I find they have no equal." A. C. Marsters & Co. druggist, guarantees them at 50c. Calapooia News. Deputy Assessor James Cole Is inter viewing tbe taxpayers of this locality. S. C. Henry was among us buying mutton sheep this week. Mra. Augusta Stevens, of Grants Pass, is visiting here with ber mother, Mrs. W. C Burke. Mrs. Reed, mother of Mrs. F. Hamil ton, left the 8th Inst, to visit with rela tives in Washington and Idaho. Grandma Goodspeed left Saturday for Albany, Oregon, to spend a couple of months visiting with relatives and old friends. Mis9 Angle Stephens has gone i to Coles Valley to teach the spring term of school. James Richard has sheared his fine Shropshire and Cots wold sheep. He has now on exhibition wool over twelve inches long and weighing eighteen pounds to the fleece. In our last items one read: Miss Wattle Howard wu3 visiting her sister Mrs. W. C. Gllmour. It should have been Mrs. W. C Underwood instead of Mrs. Gllmour. Prof. George Sawyers, of Oakland, gave a very instructive lecture on wonderland, illustrated with stereoptl- coo views, to a large audience here last Saturday. The Oakland band fur nished some good music before and after the lecture. Seventeen lunch boxos sold for prices totalling 8:11.70. The box representing an Umpqua River salmon sold for 43, Prof. Saw yers, who acted as auctioneer, said the fish was undoubtedly an unnamed species, which he would call the Gold Side. .S.
