CAME TO DOUGLAS IN 50'S 111 Only Five Days- Estimable Wife Precedes Him to Grave by Only a WeeK, Following the death ol his estimable wife ju3t seven days ago, Cyrus Smith, a well known and highly respected pioneer of Douglas county, died at his home, ii miles south of Roseburg, at 8 o'clock this morning, April 13, 1905. Death was due to heart failure, super induced by erysipelas. Mr. Smith was 75 years of age. Mr. Smith had been ill only fire days, but be declined so rapidly that the end was foreseen. In anticipation of this all of his children, except Mrs. Louis G. Dumbleton, who is convalescing from a bullet wound at her home at Winchester, were at his bedside at the time of his death. Bssldes Mrs. Dum bleton, the surviving children are; George and Irving Smith, of Portland; Mrs. C. B. D.wdeo, of Cr.tbtree, Linn county; Clay Smith, of Cleveland, and Cole and Battle Smith, who reside .at the family home. Mr. Smith is also survived by two brothers and a sister, who reside in Minnesota, and another brother, Frank Smith, who is a mem ber of the Oregon Soldiers' Home, in West Roseburg. Mr. Smith was a native of Maine. Be came to Oregon from Ohio in 1851, settling in Polk county. In 1853 he went to California, where he remained for a year and then moved to Douglas county, Oregon, purchasing and set tling upon the place where he resided up till the time of his death. He was married In 1861 to Miss Elizabeth Woodruff, of Coles Valley, also a pio neer, and who passed sway on the (ith of this month. The funeral will be held tomorrow. Services will be conducted at the fam ily home in the morning by Rev. J. A. Townsend, of thls'clty. One at Roseburg and Anotbcr at Cleve land, 10 Miles East. Two more incendiary fires one in Roseburg1 and aopfcher at Cleveland, 10 miles east of heresuch is the crimi nal record for Douglas county last night. One lire, that at Cleveland, destroyed a house and barn belonging to Chas. Thorn, of this city. The place was rented by Wm. Stelner, who was cruising in the timber when the fire occured. As Mr. Steiner had not been in the house for a week or more, it shows, of course, that a fire bug has been at work. Mr. Thorn has no clew to the identity of the incendiary. He valued the house and barn at $1000, which is covered by 8500 insurance. The contents of the house, belonging to Mr. Sterner, were uninsured. The wooden buildingadjoiningSykes1 and Thorn's brick building on Jackson street, Roseburg, and owned by J. B. Walte, the S: P. engineer, of Albany, was the scene of the second fire. The building was temporarily occupied by C. F. Greve, a shoe dealer, who carries no insurance on his stock. Fortunately the fire was discovered in Its inclplency and little or no damage resulted. The fire started at the rear of the building about 4 o'clock this morning. It was discovered by Geo., H. Fitz glbbon, a travelling salesman, who happened to be passing by at the time while on his way to the S. P. depot. Immediately running to the scene, be grabbed up a bucket of water near by and commenced fighting the flames. He soon had assistance in the parson of Mr. Greve, who slept in the building and bad been awakened by the noise of the fire. In the meantime someone else who saw the blaze Bounded the alarm and brought the tire department to the scene. Before the firemen ar rived, however, the flames were ex tinguished. That the fire was a plain case of in cendtarism Is shown by some eloquent ly mute evidence. Kerosene had been thrown upon the rear side of the build ing and some of the fluid went through the cracks between the boards and saturated the wall paper inside, and a bottle emitting a strong odor of kero sene was found near the place where the fire started. ' VLADIVOSTOK THREATENED Liaicvitch Has Been Reinforced and Another Big Land FlgM is Imminent. Special to Evening Review. Hong Kong, April 13. A British cruiser which arrived here today re ports having passed the Russian fleet 150 miles south of Saigon, steaming north. The cruiser also sighted two Japanese warships on Tuesday, going south at full speed. Another report received here today Btates that the Russian fleet is coaling off the Natuna Islands, 100 miles north of the Anamba group. Russian agents have secured 70,000 tons of coal at Saigon and 50,000 tons at Shanghai for use of the fleet. MOVEMENTS ON LAND Gunshu Pass, April 13. The Japa nese have occupied Tslullu. Better weather prevails aud a battle of some magnitude Is expected shortly. The Japanese have been dlsloged from their positions at Nanohlntsla. General Linievitch has been reinforced by troops from Harbin. The Japanese advance guard Is barely ten miles from the Russian front and BkirmiBhes are frequent. The fljlng squadron, made up of bis fastest crulserB, already is scouting the China Sea. and will open the fighting; the main squadron, made up of his battleships and armored cruisers, will complete the attack, if necessary, and guard against any attack in the rear. RUSSIAN FLEET UNITED. London, April 12 The St. Peters burg correspondent of the London Times, cabling lust night, says: ('A dispatch which has been received hero Btatlng that Admiral Rojestven sky's fleet is not disunited evokes the greatest satisfaction at the Admiralty, where the earlier reports that the bat tleships wero separated from the cruis ers caused anxiety. ''It Is though probable that Rojest vensky will coal iu the Dutch terri torial waters of Northern Sumatra and that be will await Admiral NebogatoiT, who is due in about ten days, but who will be perhaps delayed by heavy weather." AIM TO CUT OP VLADIVOSTOK. Gunshu Pass, Manchuria, April 12 Chinese state with great posltlvenesa that General Kawamura'a army, sup ported by General Nogl's army, is moving in a northeasterly direction, aiming to cut Russian communications with Vladivostok. According to the same sources 30,01)0 Japanese landed at Dalny March 18, and it is reported that six additional divisions are forming in Japan to operate against Vladivostok and Sakhalin The Manchurian Chinese have adopt ed an attitude of positive hostilities to the Russians. A body of 500 native horsemen fired on Russian troops at the village of Chendi, and Manchurian militia Is said to be taking the field on the side of the Japanese on the Hun River. IT Remonstrance Filed Against Only .One Block. IT COUNTS FOR NAUGHT Main Street, From Mosaer to Douglas, Will be Improved Under , Original Plans. Contrary to previous announcement, ooe street out of the five ombodiod in the recent Improvement program of tho City Council, has survived the on slaught of the property owners. That streot Is Main, extending from Mosher street to Douglas. At a special meet ing of the city council Wednesday night, action was accordingly taken to wards improving that street. The remoDstranco filed at the last regular meeting of tbe counoil against theimprovementof Main street affected only one block thereof from Mosher street to Lane, whereas the official notice previously pOBted referred to the street in its entirety between Mosher and Douglas. The city charter speci fies thut ln order to prevent the im provement of a street a presented remonstrance muet be signed by owners of two-thirds of the property of the whole streot; and to the effect that no particular blook in that Btreet shall be exempt from the improvement, unless the previous public notice specifies that only that block is affected. Ab already stated, the public notice referred to the whole of Main street, between Douglas street and Mosher, The misunder standing of the remonatrators residing on the block between Mosher and Lane, probably arose from the fact that the notice stuted that bids for the work would be asked for by tho block. In the great crush of streot remonstrances that overwhelmed the counoil at Its last regular meeting, the board overlooked the fact that only one block on Main street was affected by a protest. Sub sequently this fact was discovered and Mayor Hoover immediately called a special meeting of the council to take up tbe matter. In accordance with the original resolution to improve Main street, in cluding that block on which the remon strators reside, an ordinance covoring the matter was read before the council for the first and second time?. At the next regular meeting, the ordinance will be read for the third and last time and then passed. Tbe ordinance pro vides that tbe street shall first be re duced to a uniform grade and then graveled, the gravel to be spread on to a thickness of one foot for a width of IB feet through tho center of the street, thence tapering down on either side to a depth of four Inches at the gutters, which can be either of wood or con crete according to the pleasure of the proirerty owners. The stroet grade is to be established and plans and speci fications drawn up by the County Sur veyor at once. Poag, of Tate county, was shot and instantly killed today by a mob of masked men who entered the jail for the purpose of liberating James Whit, a white prisoner who Is to be placed on trial Monday on a charge of murder. The mob, consisting of only six or eight men, gained an entrance to the jail. The Sheriff's order to leave was Ignored, whereupon the officer fired, wounding one man.. The mob then fired on the Sheriff, two bullets taking effect. The mob tben left, taking their wounded companion with them. Whit remains in jail. J, Honey is con- vinced that Mr. Slsler, who is a well- known railroad man, had no guilty knowledge of the alleged Sllotz Indian Reservation land conspiracy, on a charge of complicity in which the in-, dictment was returned. C. B. Zichary, C. D. Barnard and C A. Watson, jointly indicted by the grand jury on a chargo of perjury last Saturday, today filed pleas In abate-' ment. Hearing will be Friday morn- ing, when other pleas in abatement are argued. It is thought that Congressman Binger Hormann, now enroute herey besides Congressman Williamson and others, will follow Sonator Mitchell's footsteps in fighting every inch of the ground, instead of demanding speedy trials, as was indicated when the In dictments were first returned.
