Hammltte, the undertaker, Is now a regular licensed emoaimer, nav ing just received a certificate to that effect from the Oregon State Board of Health, before whom he took the ex amination last month pursuant to the new state law. A state license is re quired where undertakers place in transit the corpses of persons who have died of contagious diseases. I The James Cox placo on Deer Creek, eight miles east of Roseburg, and com prising about 510 acres, has been sold to F. H. Redescker, a Portland capita list, for $7,000. The grantors are Burb Brockway, Geo. W. Cox, F. w. Dillard and wife and Mrs. Dillard's sister, Mrs. F. W. Barker, who resides in Califor nia. The place has been rented for a year to John W. Hedgcpeth, who now occupies It. Atty. Robt. G. Smith has begun the publication of a semi-weekly democratic newspaper, called the Herald, at Grants Pass. J. D. Quillen Is the manager of the new publication, which Is full of news and live editorial matter. All the other paiers being republican, Grants Pass and Josephine county will doubtless be much benefitted by having a live exK)nent of the other side of public and political matters. Eugene Guard: Gross Brothers, who have conducted a foundry for the past several years on East Eighth street, near Ferry, will at once commence the erection of a huge new building on lots recently purchased by them just west of the present site of their foundry and will Increase the capacity of their plant to more than double what it is now. The lot on which the new build ing will be erected Is about 300 feet square. Nearly the whole space will be covered by the foundry buildings. Besides the main building, which will be 40x30 feet In dimensions, there will be the usual smaller accessory structures. We have received the entire sample line of a manufacturer of Furs, Boas, Scarfs, etc., and we will have them on exhibition at our store for ten days. Anyone contemplating the purchase of a fur will do well to inspect this line as it is about ten times as extensive as any other line carried in the city.
