Annual State Synod Opens in Portland This Evening. The semi-annual meeting of the Southern Oregon Presbytery closed in oseburg last evening and the mem bers who bad beoti In attendance, with two or three exceptions, departed on the northbound overland train for Port land to attend tho state Synod which opens in Calvary church this evening. Included In the assemblage which de parted wore Rev. A. Ilaberly and Elder K. A. Adams, of Myrtle Point, and Elder E. O. JJencllet, of liandon, whose names were not Included in the list of those in attendance as announced two days ago. This afternoon this Presby tery will conclude its business at a session to be held in Calvary church. Tho session held, yesterday afternoon was opened with prayer by Kev. Ennis. Committee reports wero acted upon, after which the following were ap pointed as commissioners to attend tho next general assembly: Ministers, Kev. W. S. Smith, of Oakland, with Rev. Geo.Gillepp e of lVrtOr'ord, altornau ; Elders, Mr. Wilson Bowman, of Med ford, with Dr. J. Strange, of Jiose bnrg, as alternate. In the eveniDg a popular meeting in the interest of the Home Missions was held. Appropriate addresses were made by Rev. V. Gourlay Connell, Kt-v. D. II. Haro and Kev. W. G. Smith. Pending adjustment of the trouble growing out of dilTerences between Rev. Phyo V. Phelps, of Ashland, and his congregation, the pastorate- in that city was declared vacated after Dec :tlst. Thompson was bora July 24, lU, died October 8, l!i04, aged 54 years, 2 months and 14 days. It becomos our painful duty to chron icle the death of Coore V. Thompson, a pioneerof the West and a well known citizen of Douglas County, Oregon. He was born while his parents wero enroute to Oregon, across the plains, on July 24, 18.10. Ho resided In Port land until 1 STO, and then with his parents moved to Douglas County, and located at Red Hill, five miles southeast of Yoncalla. Here in IH7.1 he married Miss Mary A. Thiel, whose parents likewise were early pioneers of the west. For more than 30 years they have lived and toiled together, on the farm that has been the sene of their struggle, their success, and the comfort of their riper yeard. The wife and nine children are left to mourn his loss. He will be missed by his friends, his neighbors and acquaint ances, who will remember his pleasant smiles and words of welcome. Missed by his children who have felt his guiding hand and listened to his advice in moments of perplexities. Missed, Oh! so much, by his wife and compnninn who nursed hi in so faithfully through the days of his declining health. Wo shall miss him" are the words well spoken Of the dvinir and the dead. Georee Prior has moved onto the Horace Roadman 'arm. Abe Stevens' team became unman ageable white on his way to the dance in Dodge Canyon tho Sih, and smashed the tongue out of the hack, without injuring any of the occupants. C. D. Smith, with his waion, took the young people on their way. Willie Stephens will leave us the 15th for Walla Walla, Wash., where he intends to make bis future home. The good wishes of bis many friends here accompany him. E.' X. formerly Pullman cars, operated by the Pullman Company, but. for a dozen years past the railway company has owned and operated the sleeping car equipment. In building its sleeping cars, a departure from the old standard pattern of cars has been made to the ex tent of adding about six inches to the width and height of the sleepers. This permits of wider and higher berths. Length has also been added to berths, so that comfort Is found in them which is lucking in ordinary sleeping cars.
