Mr. Fimlley, a piaon tuner, was in our oity the tlrst of the week following his trade. Mr. Wood, uf Roseburg, has opened a butcher shop in this city. Miss Moda Drain, of Drain, spent Sunday here visiting with many friends. There is some talk of having electric lights in this city from Billy creek, a distance of about six miles. Miss Alice Wilson is at present stop ping with her sister, Mrs, S. Davis. Gale Dcvore, with a large number of hands, begun Monday to pick his ap ples. He has a large crop of them. Ernest Holliwell left last Sunday for a six weeks' visit in the eastern states. He also intends to visit the St. Louis fair. Mr. W. V. Lewis, after an extended stay among his friends and relatives here, departed Tuesday for his home in Sacramento, Calif. Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Bridges spent the forepart of the week visiting rela tives in Roseburg. Fred Applegate and several others departed during the week for the coast on a lishing trip. Harry Lauman, who is working in a laundry in Portland, is here at present visiting with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lauman. Nathan Crow and C. Summers have begun to erect a two-story house hem for O. F. Thiel. It will be used as a hotel when completed. The farmers' institute which was held here Tuesday under the auspices of the Oregon Agricultural College, wa3 a success in every way. The principal speukers were Dr. Withycombe on, "The Farmer", M. E. Cordley, "Dairy ing", and Prof. Kent on "Fruit Grow ing". Mr. Lounsbury, the representa tive of the S. P. R. li. Co., made a brief talk in the evening. The institute was attended by a very large crowd and was appreciated by all. Died, at his home on Red Hill, Oct. 8, l!)04, Georgo Thompson, a well known resident of this place. The cause of his death was heart failure.
