Jealous because he thought he had
been supplanted In the affections of
his parents, a boy 2i years old, of Ny
ack, N. Y., killed his one-month old
sister Wednesday as the baby was
sleeping In its cradle. The boy used a
statuette as a weapon, fracturing the
infant's skull. The verdict rendered
by the coroner was that the baby was
.killed by her brother, whose tender age
makes him irresponsible for the deed.
Jacob Castoline,, l7 years old, of
Tassaic, N.J. , has not closed his eyes

Miss Moda Drain, of Drain, spent

There is some talk of having electric
lights in this city from Billy creek, a
distance of about six miles.
Miss Alice Wilson is at present stop
ping with her sister, Mrs, S. Davis.
Gale Dcvore, with a large number of
hands, begun Monday to pick his ap
ples. He has a large crop of them.
Ernest Holliwell left last Sunday for
a six weeks' visit in the eastern states.
He also intends to visit the St. Louis
fair.
Mr. W. V. Lewis, after an extended
stay among his friends and relatives
here, departed Tuesday for his home in
Sacramento, Calif.
Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Bridges spent
the forepart of the week visiting rela
tives in Roseburg.
Fred Applegate and several others
departed during the week for the coast
on a lishing trip.
Harry Lauman, who is working in a
laundry in Portland, is here at present
visiting with his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Lauman.
Nathan Crow and C. Summers have
begun to erect a two-story house hem
for O. F. Thiel. It will be used as a
hotel when completed.
The farmers' institute which was held
here Tuesday under the auspices of the
Oregon Agricultural College, wa3 a
success in every way. The principal
speukers were Dr. Withycombe on,
"The Farmer", M. E. Cordley, "Dairy
ing", and Prof. Kent on "Fruit Grow
ing". Mr. Lounsbury, the representa
tive of the S. P. R. li. Co., made a brief
talk in the evening. The institute was
attended by a very large crowd and was
appreciated by all.
Died, at his home on Red Hill, Oct. 8,
l!)04, Georgo Thompson, a well known
resident of this place. The cause of
his death was heart failure. He leaves
a large family and a host of friends to
mourn his death. X.

Notice Is hereby given that the City
of Iloaeburg, Oregon, has by ordinance
determined to construct a sewer as
follows: Commencing on the north side
of Burke street in the alloy between
Mill and Pine streets and running
thence northerly along said alley to
connect with the sewer on the north
side of Floed street, between said Mill
and Pine streets. That H. J. Wilkins,
W. J. Brand and C. S. Jackson were
appointed as viewers thereof, and have
tiled their report recommending thllt
the said sewer be constructed. That
