In, their lout issue regarding conditions of the roads from Portland to San Francisco they havo stated that the road through the Canyon in Doug las County was practically impas sible; that cars could 'only go thru after 5 p. m., and on Sunday. There seems to he considerable propaganda sent out through the country en couraging the tourists to travel the Eastern Oregon route. The secre tary of the Chamber of Commerce ha twice taken up these statements with the highway association and today received a letter stating, "Hereafter we shall correct our co-p-r tor read that cars are permitted to go through at all hours but that the road 'is in had condition in spots." We are pleased to have thlB correction made although it took considerable correspondence to place the actual conditions of this road before the association." This means that for the balance of the tourist season Uoseburg will get her full share of the travel and it will not he through Eastern Oregon. This is just one of the activities of the Chamber of Commerce which will continue to keep the highway association informed as to condi tions of roods and road work in DougliiK County. "I am very proud to know that I v.-as a member of the Nlnoly-urat diWsion," declared Lieut. Tooza while recounting some pf his ex periences . at tho Multnomah hotel. It is known throughout tne expe ditionary forces for ltB aggressive ness in attack and its stubbornness in the defense. Unquestionably it saw more action, advanced a greater distance and took nioro prisoners for the time that it was overseas than any other division of the A. K. We wore .engaged in three major operations from September to Nov. 11. we advanced 34 kilometers anu took 2300 prisoners. In the Argonne battle thero were altogether 22 dl- vlslons engaged during the opera-1 tion which liunuj from Sept. 26 to I itov. 11. Filteen thousand prison ers were takou by the Americans dining that period and of this num ber 11240 were captuard by the Ninety-first roughly one seventh of the total." "What does It feel like to he In battle?" Lieutenant Tooze was asked. 14 "That Is a hard question to an swer becauuo not all people aro af fected the samo way. liut generally speaking, it is quite a matter of fact event. I do not think there was anyone whlo has been undor fire, but who was temporarily frightened when a shell or bullet enmo too near for comfort. Thero Is much ratai lsm of the battlefield. Time and time again, I havo hoard this ex pression: 'If I am going to get It, I will get U. that's all.' And it is true that shells and bullets aro not choosers of persons. "Tho average doughboy fears shells more than he does bullets. This is duo to the blood-curdling noise they make while traveliug through tho air. liut shells are less dangerous because one usually has time td drop to the ground and un less it lands too near, ho i practi cally safe." Wherefore, though, the expression about the hutchet? It Is traceable to a custom tormerly ob served by the North American Indians.
