Do your Jams and
Jellies ever "Candy"?
Many women have been so discouraged by this trouble
that they have almost stopped putting up fruit.
Yet, there is an easy, simple way to avoid it. Use l
Kara (Red Label) and y sugar in your preserving syrup,
instead of sugar alone.
Karo is a fine, clear syrup, with a natural affinity for
the juices of trie fruit.
It blends the sugar with the fruit juice brings out all
the "fruity" flavor.
You, too, will obtain perfect results this summer if you
will use j Karo Red Label) and y$ sugar instead of all
sugar for preserving.
You will find your jelly clear and firm your preserves
rich with heavy syrup your jams deliciously mellow and
"fruity". Not a sign of "candying".
For Cooking, Baking and Candy-Making Karo (Red
Label) is used in millions of homes. In all cooking and
baking recipes use Karo instead of sugar. It is sweet, of
delicate flavor, and brings out the natural flavor of the food.

THAT ROAD IS OPEN
The National Parks Highway As
sociation Issues a weekly bulletin
giving conditions of automobile
roails throughout the country. In,
their lout issue regarding conditions
of the roads from Portland to San
Francisco they havo stated that the
road through the Canyon in Doug
las County was practically impas
sible; that cars could 'only go thru
after 5 p. m., and on Sunday. There
seems to he considerable propaganda
sent out through the country en
couraging the tourists to travel the
Eastern Oregon route. The secre
tary of the Chamber of Commerce
ha twice taken up these statements
with the highway association and
today received a letter stating,
"Hereafter we shall correct our co-p-r
tor read that cars are permitted
to go through at all hours but that
the road 'is in had condition in
spots." We are pleased to have
thlB correction made although it
took considerable correspondence to
place the actual conditions of this
road before the association." This
means that for the balance of the
tourist season Uoseburg will get her
full share of the travel and it will
not he through Eastern Oregon.
This is just one of the activities of
the Chamber of Commerce which
will continue to keep the highway
association informed as to condi
tions of roods and road work in
DougliiK County.

It is known throughout tne expe

ness in attack and its stubbornness
in the defense. Unquestionably it
saw more action, advanced a greater
distance and took nioro prisoners
for the time that it was overseas
than any other division of the A. K.
We wore .engaged in three major
operations from September to Nov.

"What does It feel like to he In

However. I do not think there was
anyone whlo has been undor fire, but
who was temporarily frightened

that shells and bullets aro not

shells more than he does bullets.

Bury tho Hatchet.
To "bury the hatchet" not In some
body's head, as one of tho season's
comediennes cleverly put It Is to "let
bygones he bygones," to forgive and
forget an Injury; In a word, to show
that you have real sporting blood In
the gnme of life. Wherefore, though,
the expression about the hutchet? It
Is traceable to a custom tormerly ob
served by the North American Indians.
At tho command of the "Great Spirit,"
they were obliged, when they took up
the calumet, or the plpe-of-peace, to
Imrv the wennons of war In the
