JANUARY BOY and GIRL OF THE MONTH MARCH FEBRUARY Waluer Sampson and Claudia Lina Margaret Garner and Richard Roso Each month since the beginning of school, a committee of fa c u lty and students has been se le c tin g candidates to be the re c ip ie n ts of the award fo r being the outstanding boy or g i r l of the month. Students are selected fo r th e ir t o t a l co n trib u tio n to the l i f e of the school. A fter the committee has picked several candidates, the f in a l se le c tio n is made by a vote of junior and senior stu d en ts. Each month’s winners receive a b e a u tifu l watch and have th e ir p ic tu re placed in the place of honor in the h a ll of Academic Building I. CLASS OF ‘68’ HONORED The Salem Chapter of A lturas In te rn a tio n a l Club honored the 1968 graduates of Chemawa High School with a reception in the Study Cen t e r Sunday afternoon, February 18. Dave McCarty and Rusty Gwynn, two North Salem High School students en te rta in ed with fo lk singing in which the students enjoyed very much. In keeping w ith February theme, ta b le decorations were red, w hite, and blue with sm all American f la g s . The cake was decorated with the George Washington theme o f a white cake covered w ith l i t t l e red cher rie s . The reception was to honor the graduating c la ss of 1968, and give a s s is ta n ts to those students who are planning to e n te r the business world. Mary Haleak OCE Band Plays On Friday morning, A pril 5, the Stage Band presented a concert, which was supposed to s t a r t a t 11 :00 A, M. A fter w aiting 15 min u tes fo r the drummer and trombone p la y e r, Maxim Lestenkoff and Mr. Wolfe were in v ite d to f i l l in . We r e a lly enjoyed having Max on the drums and Mr. Wolfe on the trom bone. from Trees To Essay Clara Van Winkle and John^Sharky R adiation Tried " S c ie n tific Experim ent!1" Last month over a t the A gricul tu re Department our Botany te a c h e r- Mr. Morrow- had seeds exposed to ra d ia tio n fo r c e rta in lengths of tim e. (1 sec—2 sec—3 sec—3 sec) The primary purpose of th is e x p eri ment was to determine the e f f e c t of various amounts of ra d ia tio n on seeds. When we did th is experiment we selected four seeds th a t had been exposed to d iff e re n t amounts of ra d ia tio n and planted them in tr a y s . The ra d ia tio n speeded up the germination and d id n 't change the seed growth as thought. A fter the seeds germinated we d id n 't no tice much e ff e c t on the seedling growth. The most im port ant e ff e c t we did see was th a t the ra d ia tio n speeded up the germina tio n . "Come to our Botany c la s s and see th e r e s u lts ! On March 21, the s ix th period chem istry c la s s found out about i t when they went on a f ie l d trip , to Crown Z ellerback Corporation in Oregon C ity. The to u r took in through the p la n t where we sajr b ig logs ground in to c h ip s. These chips were then mixed w ith chemicals to make a liq u id pulp which i s pressed and heated to make paper. We saw samples of a l l kinds oi paper from th ic k wrapping paper tc th in tis s u e paper. ____________________James O'Malley Career Day Held Junior and Senior students took p a rt in a Federal Career Day Pro gram, March 29, 1968. Students gathered in the school auditorium a t 8:30 A M, where rep re s e n ta tiv e s of the various dep artm ents of Federal Service spoke on the o p p o rtu n ities w ith t h e ir own branch. The f i r s t speaker was Mr. Frank Archambault, In te rn a l Revenue Ser v ic e , San Francisco. Students were excited to leg rn th a t Mr. Arch ambault was a 1931 graduate of our school. Others appearing on the program were: Mr. B ill B ennett, IRS, Anch orage; Mr. Redeye, Oregon S tate Hos p i t a i ; Mr. P. J.
