The tr ip i s a part o f a planned program o f exploring the work and study opportunties o f the Bay area. Many o f these students have tenta tiv e plans fo r going to th is area fo r advanced train in g a fte r gradua tio n . The students get f i r s t hand ex perience in c it y liv in g , by staying in hotels and eating in restaurants, This year the agenda included stops at a number o f co lle g e s, a v i s i t to the IBM Center, a trip through General Motors auto assem b ly lin e , and a v i s i t aboard an a ir c r a ft c a r r ie r . This i s the third consecutive year that Chemawa seniors have made th is tour and each year they bring back valuable information fo r the r e s t o f the students. NUMBER 3 CHOIR MAKES NORTHERN TOUR Chemawa High School's s ix ty mem ber choir i s making i t ’ s f i r s t tour to the State o f Alaska and w i ll be appearing in the C itie s of S itk a , Wrangell and Juneau in addition to performing fo r i t ’ s s is te r schools at Mt. Edgecumbe and Wrangell In st itu te . Comprising the s ix ty choral members, 52 are native Alaskans and the r e s t of the students, including the dancers, are Navajo. The Music Department at Chemawa High School serves 300 students who may e le c t to p articip a te in one of several performing groups which represent the school on many occas ions in the lo c a l community. One of these occasions was a t the National Congress of American Indians Conv ention which was held la s t October in Portland, Oregon where the choir received a standing ovation. The Indian Dancers are a very co lo rfu l and entertaining group of students performing dances of v a r i ous trib e s from the South-Western S ta tes. This group i s always in demand fo r performances a t lo c a l elementary school and other groups in the Salem-Portland area. The Choir’ s program w i ll cover a wide range of the fin e s t choral music a vailab le to high school cho r a l groups including works by 16th, I8th and 20th century composers, both sacred and secu lar. The Pro gram also includes fo lk songs from many lands as w ell as popular songs of today. Within the choir are several small singing groups, two of them w ill be performing on th is tour. They are a g i r l s ' t r io from Barter Island, Alaska and th e . ’’Happy v a l le y S in g e r,” a small ensemble o f lU members. These groups are under the d ir ection o f Eldon R. Wolfe, Director of Music a t Chemawa High School, a ssisted by Cary W. Buchanan. Traveling with the group w i ll be Mr. H. 0. W alters, Superintendent; Mr. R. Sorensen, P rin cip al; Miss Ward, G irls P .E .; and Mrs. Begay; G irls Guidance. Bands and choral groups from Oregon College of Education have been presenting concerts in the. auditorium. The OCE concert band presented th eir winter program Thursday morning, February 29th.
