Newspaper Page Text4 THE CHEMA WA AMERICAN Chemawa Hosts Foreign Visitors More Students Are Enrolled Students at Chemawa were hosts to a group of foreign students who are enrolled at Oregon State Uni versity, Corvallis. Countries rep re sented by the group were: Figi Islyands, Iran, Laos, Peru, and Thailand. These students are studing the American school systems and will return home to become teachers in their own lands, While they were on campus our students h ad an opportunity to get a social studies lesson in the flesh. Some of the visitors spoke to our social studies groups and gave demonstrations of, writing and speaking in th eir native language. Sharon Velarde Merle Amaktoolik Don’t Be a Dropout CHURCH BASKETBALL TEAM The church basketball team has started to raise money to buy uni forms and pay entry fees. The church team entered the league last" year and did real well for the first year. Many of th e boys that have previously played for Chemawa varsity team will be par ticipating in the league. They should have a good team this season,. Anderson Tullie BEST EFFORT NEEDED All students th at attend school at Chemawa can learn many things if we put forth our best at all times. I hope all students are en joying themselves here at school and are cooperating with their teachers to learn more each year. Edward Fachine LIKES AND DISLIKES OF STUDY HALL W hat I like and dislike about our stiidy hall: What I like about our auditor ium study hall is: It is always quiet making our studying easier. The students are very cooperative and have respect for each other and our teacher Mr. Cahill. There are a couple of things I don’t like about our study hall. Our study hall has no tables on which to do our writing. We could not go to the library for the first five weeks because of such a large group of students. Now on Tues days and Thursdays we can go if we get a pass. Evie McLaughlin On my first trip away from home I was eleven years old, and head ing for a boarding school. Through several years away from home I have often thought of going home, but coming back to school each year, has made me know that there is knowledge to be learned. You can’t learn by going home or drop ping out of school for a year. You will only fall further behind. I’ve learned to look back on my mistakes and try to see why they were made. And ask myself what I could do to correct them. Now that school has started and I am back in class, I really want to study. Would you rath er goof off and go home and say you’re sm art er than I? Clifford Charlie Library The Cliemawa School Library started the year with one period orientation for every student. This was to acquaint the sthdents with thé facilities and the rules of the library. This is.being followed by instruc tion every two weeks for the stu dents in Freshm an and Sophomore classes. They are learning how to use the many kinds of reference books so that they may be able to find the things they are looking for without having to wait for the Li brarian’s assistance. All of the students of the school are enjoying the library this year and every week the circulation is increasing. Many new books have ben pur chased for the library and are now in the process of being added to the shelves. Recreation Club Being a member of The Recrea tion Club is fun, but one has to put a lot of effort and enthusiasm into iti The Recreation Club now has ninety boys and girls as members and is divided into six committees. Each committee is responsible for certain duties. The newly elected officers are: President, Alfred Andre; Vice Pres: ident, Stanley Begay; Secretary, Robert A rthur; Treasurer, Wasillie Fannie T ritt in front of Winona to Greet New Students. Enrollment this year at Chemawa is the highest it has been for sever al years. Total enrollment has reached 942 with 233 Navaho and 709 Alaskan students. Boys outnumber girls by 112 with 527 distributed through these dorm itories: Mitchell Hall 133, Brewer 217, and McNary 177. The 415 girls are housed 269 in Winona Hall and 146 in McBride. In spite of this high enrollment many admission applications had to be rejected. No increase in dormitory person nel was required to take care of this increased num ber of students. The students seem to be enjoying the chance to make additional ac quaintances and form, new friend ships. Cyrus Savetilik Judy Nagaruk Tagotuk; Sergeant-At-Arms, Jim Lewis Jr. and Tommy Wheeler. Each student is capable of carrying on the duties that they are respon sible for. The recreation program has al- ready begun with 140 boys signed up for basketball and 160 signed up for weight training. They work out .every Monday and Tuesday from 4:00 to 5:00 and 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Intram ural basketball will be gin on November 1. The recreation program also has plans for a bulletin board contest in which a trophy will be given each month to the best decorated bulletin board in the dormitories. Anderson Tullie
