THE CHEMAW A AMERICAN STUDENTS TRAVEL OUR TRIP m ents from Chemawa students: Our class took an educational trip to the Portland Museum and Portland Zoo. The most interesting thing th at I saw was the aquarium. There were turtles, fish, snakes, and frogs in it. I had never seen an aquarium before. The following are additional student impressions: Joey Chischilly A fter we went into the classroom with our host we did work with them . When they went to shop we want with them and watched as they worked on th eir projects. My host was making a pen holder. We played volley ball' in the gym for 30 minutes. I had dinner at my host’s house. I enjoyed my visit. Donald Hicks This huge walk-in h eart was made out of chicken wire, plastic and concrete so th at you can walk in it and hear the h ea rt beating. The huge h eart weighs two tons. Our h eart pumps five quarts of blood through our body in about sixty seconds. Robert L uther An unusual thing th a t I saw was the electric eel. I never heard of or saw a living fish making electricity in his body. I didn’t know th a t it was blind until I read the sign. Our guide told us th at the electric eel produces from 450 to 600 volts of electricity. Bennie B. Yazzie The most interesting thing th at I saw was the eagle’s nest. The nest was in side the big glass. There were two eggs in the nest. There was a humming b ird ’s nest beside the eagle’s nest. The humming birds are very small. Golga Napoka TO THE COAST Our class had a trip to the coast on A pril 10. It was a w onderful trip. We stopped at Boiler Bay and at Depoa Bay where we visited the Curio Shop. We saw a fishing boat leave. Next we had lunch at Fogarty Beach. A fter lunch we all played in the w ater and waded in the surf. Some of us got our clothes wet in the ocean. We went on to Agate Beach where we looked for sea shells and pretty rocks. It really rained hard on the way home. We got back to Chemawa a little after five o’clock. It was a wonderful trip, everyone had lots of fun. No one will ever forget our trip to the coast. Veronica Stone Rose Sam Mary Noes Sally Brown Jim Christian King Brown FERNWOOD SCHOOL VISIT Mrs. Louise LeV itin’s class visit ed the Fernwood School in P ort land, Oregon. The students spent the entire school day with the F ern wood students. Each Chemewa stu dent had her or his hostess or host. The following are some of the com 5 Our trip to P ortland was exciting. The lights in the night were sparkling like stars. In the afternoon the students have one-half hour of dancing. Some of the boys and girls are just crazy about dancing. Ira Smith When it was tim e for lunch we went to the gymnasium to eat lunch. They do not have a dining hall like we do. At 12:30 we w ent to Home Economics. School is out at 3:00 p.m. A fter school Karen and Debbie brought Joan and me to th eir home. We went to the Lloyd Center. We ate dinner at Karen and Debbie’s home, then we watched tele vision until we had to re tu rn to come back to Chemawa. Lucy Johnson It was a most interesting trip. A fter we visited Fernwood School, I went home w ith my host. His parents took us to the Lloyd Center, then we went to see a hotel. I was told many things about the hotel. When we retu rn ed to my host’s home we had dinner and watched TV until it was tim e to re tu rn to Chemawa. Steve Arizona . . . I w ent to shop w ith my host. He was making a pen set. The teacher told each of our boys to make a pen set so we each made one. . . . In the class room I saw a film on Lewis and Clark and one on N atural Resources. . . . The principal told the Fernwood boys and girls to take real good care of us and he said th at he knew th a t we would enjoy everything. . . . It cer tainly was a wonderful, beautiful trip. I certainly enjoyed it. Joan Ayuluk TRIP TO OSWEGO Mrs. Duncan’s room reports on th eir trip to Oswego. The following are student rem arks: My trip to Oswego was very in terest ing. At first I felt uneasy but afte r I got to know my new friend it was fun. I went to all h er classes and then afte r school I went to h er home. I m et her grandm other. Grandma took us to see Lake Oswego. She told me th a t a long tim e ago a m eteor fell there. The rocks are all black. Olga Standifer . . . My host took me to his class, then to the dining room w here we had lunch. A fter lunch we w ent to th e li brary and then to the speech class where the boys and girls had to make speeches. . . . When we got to my host’s home we w ent fo r a boat ride. At 6:30 we ate supper and then I had to re tu rn to the bus. David H. Yazzie . . . When school was out my friend and I went to his home. W hen we got to his house we went out to play golf. I had never played golf before. Then we played basketball fo r awhile. He took me to his friend’s house, w here we saw a movie. . . . A fter dinner we went to m eet the Chemawa bus. I enjoyed my trip to Oswego and had lots of fun. Moses Alexie . . . The day we visited Oswego it was my eighteenth birthday. . . When my hostess and I got to h er home her little brother, two years old, asked me if I was an Indian girl. I said, “I am a Navajo girl.” He said, “If you are an Indian girl, how come you don’t have a feather in your hair?” It really did sound funny. My hostess m other baked me a birthday cake and p u t eighteen candles on it. Gee! I was so surprised th at I did not know what to do or say. They were such very nice people. . . . They told me th at I should try to blow the candles out. Nellie Barbone . . . When my friend and I w ent to his house we went down in the base m ent and there we saw a movie. Then we went outside and played baseball until it was time to eat. We w ent into the house and washed our hands before we ate. I never knew th at I would have so m uch fun. Paul Anderson . . . When we got home I helped my friend w ith his chores and then we played basketball until it was tim e to eat our supper. . . . The whole family took me back to our bus. . . . That was the end of my facinating trip, Lee MT. ANGEL TRIP One Sunday in April, some of the Catholic students took a trip to Mt. Angel. The Seminarians took us on a tour through the beautiful cam pus and the museum. The museum was very interesting. We looked at the many stuffed animals and an interesting coin collection. We attended church services in the pretty church. We were served refreshm ents and then we retu rn ed to Chemawa We enjoyed the trip very much and wish to thank the Seminarians for all they have done for us and thanks to all who made the trip possible. Grace One RUSSIAN ORTHODOX STUDENTS ATTEND SERVICES On April 2nd we Russion Ortho dox students went to Portland, Oregon, to attend church services and receive holy communion. We had an opportunity to meet and visit with the Priest. I enjoyed the services as it rem inded me of my home and parents. Sinka Littlefish
