The Chem awa American SHOP TALK SHOE SHOP Second sem ester finds four new students in the shoe shop. They a re Franklin Spearson, Ralph Scott, Lloyd S anders a n d C lyde Sam pson. Besides re p a ir of countless pairs of shoes, w e like the le a th e r tooling projects. INDUSTRIAL ARTS The 7th, 8th a n d 9th g ra d e boys of the industrial arts shop h av e just com pleted a sem ester of w ood w ork ing in w hich they studied the proper care a n d use of h a n d tools. They h av e m ad e ben ch hooks, • w hat-not shelves, shoe shine boxes a n d v ari ous other articles useful in the home. BOYS' DEPARTMENT The little men in Mitchell hall are en joying exploring the many possibilities of the monkey bars that have been set up under the play shed. With this new set-up the boys can have tun even if it does rain every day. The sixth grade boys enjoyed a day at the Salem Y.M.C.A. on January 6, 1951. They played a gam e of basketball which ended in a score of 11-14 in favor of Chem aw a. After the gam e the boys en joyed a swim in the swimming pool. McNary hall started the New Year with a pajam a party in the reading room. Chuck Reed and Dick Thorpe made the w alls rumble to the tune of "Fire Ball B o o g ie."'It w as mostly "fire" but every one enjoyed i t .: Refreshments w ere served, and w e noticed that "Slim" Spearson m ade the rounds at least four times. Have you noticed the "New Look" on some of the McNary hall G reats? We admire the curly locks on, three of our delicate young gentlemen, namely: .Rod-, ney Davis, Ray "C upie" Pete, and "Goldie Locks'' Belgarde. My! Myj The "C hem aw a Spirits," McNary h all's outstanding entry in the Salem Church League, have been playing "each week. Coach Stan Ashcut is very proud of ,his charges an d hopes to bring them through the season with a perfect record. Much of' this credit is due to the exceptional wdrk of H orace: Iijonpipe and Ray Pete. One of the greatest advances m ade by the McNary hall students this year w as w hen Dick Thorpe and his room-mate Robert Kirk scrubbed their room. They usually hire a certain boy from Brewer hall to do the work. Of course, w e are not mentioning any names, but one is closely related to, him—how about it, Dick? During the second sem ester the b oys will study drafting a n d ap p lie d arts-; They will sp en d one hour each d a y in the shop. There a re two divi sions of the 7th grad e, one division in the eighth, a n d one in the ninth. AUTO SHOP The boys in the au to shop a re con cen trating on the better points of a w ell organized, clean shop. In the p a st w e h av e not quite m et these requirem ents. Mr. S peed h a s b e e n stressing the fact that cleanliness g oes with the job a n d custom ers also d em an d n e a tn e ss in a n au to shop. C lean tools in their proper p laces will a d d to the efficiency of an y w orker a n d the tools will last longer. The shop h as just com pleted the overhaul of the pow er p lan t's pick u p a n d "T uba" is quite pleased. Now w e a re putting a new motor a n d a new tw o-speed differential in the larg e school bus. CARPENTRY The c arp en ter shop boys h av e b e e n busy, a s all the buildings n eed som e repair. The g ra d e school class rooms all h av e h a d new bulletin b o ard s a n d book shelves put up. All of the c a rp e n te r boys h a d a h a n d in doing this work. Now w e a re le a rn ing how to re a d the "fram ing sq u are." It is u sed for cutting the following kinds of rafters: common, jack, hip, valley a n d others. This work is very interesting, a s it is p os sible to m ake a circle w ith a fram ing square. Three new students en te re d the class a t the b e g in n in g of the second sem ester. They a re L aw rence H ead, Everett Jones a n d L eonard Hahn. These boys a re all freshm en. The boys seem in terested in their work a n d interested in learn in g the safety rules for running all the pow er m achines. ELECTRIC SHOP The electricians, Robert Kirk, Al fred Hawk a n d D elm ar Hickox, u n der the g u id a n c e of their teacher, Mr. Lester Bolton, h av e b e e n a b le to k eep the lights burning in spite of the storms. Rain a n d w ind storms h av e c a u se d a few w ires to come 3 DOW N ON THE FARM The senior farm boys h av e a pro ject of rebuilding one of the old farm cats into a tractor, d e sig n e d by Mr. Noel a n d the senior boys. This project w as sta rte d a b o u t a m onth ago. The boys in the other classes h av e various assig n m en ts to jobs ab o u t the farm, som e work a t the dairy, som e a t Pigville, others tak e charg e of the m eat cutting a n d som e work in the shop rep airin g the broken m a chinery a n d w ith th at com es the le a rn in g of how to h a n d le tools, sh a rp e n them, a n d ca re for them. The senior ag" boys h av e c la sse s from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. a n d from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. The Junior boys' classes a re from 8:00 a.m. to 9:.3O a.m. The 10A class m eets a t 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., w hile the lOB's h a v e class in the p.m. from 1:00 to 2:00. All the a g classes a re ta u g h t b y Mr. O'Brien. The boys h a v e tu rned out som e nice le a th e r work. Among the a rti cles m ad e a re belts, w allets, key cases, a n d com b cases.
