F rid ay evening our varsity will m eet th e Mt. A ngel College team here on the hom e floor. T h e gam e prom ises to be a fast one, as th e A ngels have a speedy com bination, and our varsity is leaving n o th in g u n done th at will help get the team in shape for the gam e. M r. and Mrs. B radley, parents of M r. Roy B radley, arrived a few days ago from S outh D akota. Mr. B radley will be forem an of co n stru ctio n on th e new boys’ d o rm ito ry w hich is now in course of b u ild in g at C hem aw a. Both Mr. an d Mrs. Bradley are well know n here as they passed a year w ith us not long ago w hile M r. B radley was su p erv isin g the co n stru ctio n of a num ber of b u ild in g s at o u r school. O ur w restlers w ho have been w orking o u t for som e tim e u n d er the d irectio n s of E llis W h ite, form er Salem h ig h sch o o l heavyw eight, will meet the O. A. C. fre sh m en here on T h u rsd ay evening in th eir first m atch. T h ere are six en tries on th e program , ra n g in g in w eight from 110 to 158 pounds, and th e coach is co n fident of each m an giving a good account of him self. T h e m en likely to represent Cheinaw a are: Silas H aw k , captain; A lex P etellin, M artin A udette, E arl D onnelly, and E li K arabelnikoff. O n S unday evening in chapel th e orchestra played an “ In term ezzo ” by B endix, A lbert O rsen sang “ Lead Me All th e W a y ” by B riggs, O ka P au lin a sang “ W hen Y ou Took in th e H eart of a R o se” by M ethven, Rose G ray recited “ U ncle D an ’l ’s A p p a ritio n ,” F ra n k Johnson sang “ T h e Barefoot T ra il” by W iggers, the choir sang “ T w ilig h t S eren ad e” by G ard n er, and S upt. H all closed th e exercises w ith a m ost able talk on th e pow er and value of “ C h a ra c te r.” As is alw ays tru e of all of Mr. H a ll’s talks, th is was sim ply sp le n did and it should aw aken our young people to the m anifold advantages w hich will be th eirs if th ey d e velop good ch aracters and preserve th em . A rrangem en ts were m ade in the school assem bly last week for an inter-class contest in songs and yells to take place Feb. 28, since th is is the regular day for th e school assem bly, to com m em orate C hem aw a’s forty-second anniversary, w hich will be Feb. 25. T he m em bers of each vocational class will also w rite poems, com m em orating C hem aw a, and present them to the class for a decision as to w hich shall be entered in the contest. T h e poem s are to be read in assem bly, and ju d g es will decide w hich poem s are most w orthy. P rizes will be aw arded for th e poems according to m erit. E ach W ednesday betw een now and F eb. 28 th e exercises will be confined to a stu d y of C hem aw a’s h isto ry . C arrie A nderson w as elected by the stu d en ts to give a brief history of Chem aw a next W ednesday to the A division, and C lara H am ilton will present th e facts concerning th e founding of the school to th e B division. PA G E 3 DOMESTIC ART NOTES Mrs. G o k ev ’s class is very busy ren o v atin g th e sm all g irls ’ serge dresses. T he seventh and the eig h th grade girls are review ing the essentials in the course of stu d y . T he girls have become q u ite e x p e rt at p la itin g an d pressing. W e also plan how we can save by m ak in g over old clo th ing for younger m em bers of th e fam ily, Mrs. K irk and her girls took all the old g ray sk irts and made them into dresses for th e small g irls of E C om pany. She em broidered them w ith red floss an d they are very nice looking. T h e p arts th a t w ere not suitable for dresses were m ade into rugs. T he vocational girls, u n d er the direction of th e ir teacher, renovated 150 of th e old plaited serge sk irts. T h e sk irts were out of style and badly w orn. W e first ripped them up, b rushed and cleaned them w ith gasoline and reconstructed them on new lines. VARSITY SCALP W.U. FRESHMEN AND PORTLAND Y.M.C.A. Last T h u rsd ay evening o u r varsity played th e W il lam ette U niversity freshm en in Salem as a prelim in ary to the W .S .C . and W .U . conference gam e. O verconfidence has lost the gam e for m any a team and w hile it could not be done ic looked a little like th e freshm en were going to hang one on us. O ur tossers were not ready to go at th e tip-off and W il lam ette got the ju m p th a t gave them confidence and in th e h u rry to get g oing our fellows m ade m any poor passes and often threw the ball directly into th e hands of t h e opponent as well as ex h ib itin g a lot of poor bas k et shooting. T h e first half ended 7 to 7. In th e second half our fellows started a little m ore determ ined and su re w ith G eorge and B uchert, fo r w ard and guard respectively, scoring m ore consistently w ith 10 points for G eorge and 13 for B uchert. T h e gam e ended 29 to 14 in ou r favor. On T h u rsd ay evening the varsity exhibited a little b etter b ran d of ball when th ey defeated th e P ortland Y . M. C. A. team here 28 to 19, b u t som ehow our five d o n ’t seem to have th e old fight and d eterm ination th at characterized the team in the early p art of th e season. As in the gam e w ith the freshm en G eorge failed to connect consistently w hile B uchert pulled th ro u g h w ith 9 points and DePoe, who played a good offensive gam e, was our high point m an w ith 10. In a prelim inary gam e our hotshots w ere tak en into cam p by the Salem S enators by a 19 to 26 score. T h o u g h the Senators were an older and m ore e x p e ri enced b unch of boys our first term ers played them to a standstill and the gam e w as an y b o d y ’s till th e last couple of m inutes w hen the S enators slipped in a couple of e x tra baskets.
