O ne clause in his letter of re com m endation was sufficient to at once secure him the place. I t w as this: “ H e is a boy who know s how to c a rry o u t an o rd er to th e m inutest d e ta il.” It is need less to say th a t th e m erch an t did not care to look for fu rth e r testim ony as to his fitness. T h a t was the kind of a boy all business men are looking for. T h a t boy is on th e way to su ccess—because he know s how to obey orders. W h y is it th a t some you n g people can carry out orders so fully as to win th e com m endation of th eir em ployers w hile others seem alw ays to leave o u t som e th in g , to b u n g le and confuse, perhaps, th e m ost im p o rta n t th in g of all? It m ust be because they are not seeking to please th eir em ployer an d m ake his business theirs. T h ey are after the pay, b u t do not tak e a personal in te re st in th e w ork. T hey oo not give th eir w hole m ind to th eir business, but give only half a tte n tio n , an d they do not grasp all th e details of orders given them and so fail to carry them ou t. Such youn g people are found everyw here. W e have to deal w ith a few boys and girls here at Chem aw a who have these failings, and they are like broken staffs upon w hich we lean and w hich fail us. It is a sad com m ent upon an y o n e’s ch aracter th at it m ust be said, ‘ ‘ I can n o t tru s t him to do w hat he is told. ’ ’ Boys and g irls, ask yourselves if you are ready to carry o u t o r ders to th e m in u test d etail, ju st as they are given to you? If you are, then you have th a t w hich will re com m end you to those who are looking for faithful and conscientious w orkers. B usiness m en do not em ploy half hearted, in atten tiv e people. N ow is the tim e to learn this lesson th a t it may be of use to you when you leave here to assum e th e d u tie s and responsibilities of outside life. N o m atter w hat business you take up, if you w ant to succeed, you m u st do w hat is assigned you a little b e tte r th an anyone else about you— better th an the o th er fellow —so th a t the atten tio n of yo u r superiors will be attra cte d to you. Sim ply doing your d u ty will not do, for everyone is expected to do his d u ty . You can n o t m ake people believe th a t you are interested in yo ur w ork if you are not. No. 16 E veryw here we see men an d women m aking “ bad b reak s” w hich cost friendships and positions sim ply because th ey have never developed the q u ality know n as tact. Business men lose custom ers, law yers lose th eir clients, physicians th e ir practice, preachers lose th eir power in the p u lp it, teachers and o th ers lose th eir positions, stu d e n ts lose th eir stan d in g , all because o f lack of tact. No m atter how m uch ability a person m ay have, if he lacks the tact to use it effectively, to say th e rig h t and to do the rig h t th in g at the rig h t tim e, his ability is practically valueless. It is said th a t m any business concerns and in s titu tions put tact a t th e head of a list of requirem ents in th eir em ployes. A tactless person does not get along very well w ith o th er people because of the faculty of an tag o n izin g o thers. T h ey seem to say th e w rong th in g , h u rt people’s feelings, because they lack an a p preciation of th e value of tact. T actful people m ake friends rapidly because they have a way of d raw in g people out and in d u cin g them to express th e best w ithin them . T act is adm irably described as “ th e ability to p u t yourself in the o th er fellow ’s place and consider th e m atter as it appears to h im .” If you would win friends you m ust also be g enerous. L arge-hearted ness is alw ays popular. L earn to say pleasant th in g s of others. Look for the good in o thers. Be fair and ju s t in every criticism , and bew are alw ays of people who are constantly criticizing others, fin d ing flaws and defects in their characters, or in sin u a tin g th at they are not q u ite w hat they o u g h t to be. Such persons are d an gerous. It is the little th in g s here at Chem aw a w hich m ake your education, m orally, academ ically and v o cation ally. All th e big th in g s are m ade up of little th in g s, so if you attend to th e little th in g s you are on the rig h t road. A person possessing these qualities cannot be h u rt too deeply for recovery, n o th in g can in ju re him p e r m anently, n o th in g can stop him — it serves him . and he in tu rn serves all h u m a n ity , a pow er in th e lan d , a w onderful, com plete, successful m an or w om an. So, for success three th in g s are essential: In telli- ( Continued on page 4)
