T h e fact th a t we have so m any stu d e n ts in atten d an ce
at C hem aw a today is evidence th a t th ey cam e here to
secure an ed u catio n . It is evidence th a t they are here
to secure an education in order th a t they m ay be
equipped, prep ared , for th e b attle of life and it is a
b attle, b u t a b attle w orthy th e m aterial in th e best of
us. W e refer strictly to th e battle of life, not th e battle
w hich brings a sm ell of pow der, but a battle th a t re­
q u ires red blood ju st th e sam e.
If our stu d e n ts are to be successes in life th ey m ust be
m ade of good m aterial and on th at th e re m u st be e x ­
pended th e best of care and w o rk m an sh ip . T h e s tu ­
d en ts, too, m ust fashion th e ir ow n lives and p u t into
practice w hat is b ro u g h t to them by th e ir in stru c to rs.
If a stu d e n t has a good th o u g h t-life he is far on the
road to success. R em em ber, stu d en ts, you will be
ju s t w hat you th in k . If you th in k stro n g and noble
th o u g h ts you will be stro n g and noble. If you th iu k
low and vile th o u g h ts you will be low and vile. T h ere
is no escape from th is —it is a certain law.
So, stu d en ts, if you feel th a t you can and will suc­
ceed you w ill be successful. If you feel tim id, and
presist in th e th o u g h t th a t you h av e n ’t the capacity,
th en , indeed, you have lost th e o p p o rtu n ity th a t
w ould have given you success. T h ere is no half-w ay
lin e. It rem ains to be seen w hether C hem aw a is to
co n tin u e to have th e p ride an d th e glory of having
educated men and women who have gone out in to the
world and m ade successes.
Success m eans w hat? I t m eans w ork, it m eans sac­
rifice, it m eans patience. H e w ho becomes learned
m ust g ath er wisdom every d ay . H e who becomes rich
m ust p u t aside a little every day and m ust invest it
p ro p erly . N o person can be very m uch of a success
who cannot save. H e who becomes stro n g m ust e x e r­
cise every m uscle of his body every day; and he who
becomes m entally vigorous m ust exercise th e th in k ­
ing part of him , th a t it may become stro n g and assist
him to develop his ow n life in a broader and g ran d er
w ay.
T h e m an or wom an who finds riches th ro u g h in d i­
vidual effort, gets the wisdom and u n d ersta n d in g and
know ledge him self, is a g ran d er and nobler m an oi

ited w ealth.
T ru e success lies in being m aster of o n e’s own self in
th e situ atio n s as they arise in daily life. T he highly ed ­
ucated m an places a hig h value on his life and d e te r­
m ines the use he will m ake of it. T herefore, students,
cultivate your th o u g h t life— tak e full advantage of
your school days rig h t now . G o into your w ork and
stu d ies here as th o u g h you w ere choosing them ;
do your tasks in a sp irit of w illingness; in all you do
strive to gain independent th o u g h t and action, so th at
w hen you come to take a place in th e w o rld ’s w ork you
will be able to use your lives in a purposeful, helpful
w ay.
T h e one th in g w hich cannot be bro u g h t to your
notice too often, and w hich o u g h t to be em phasized
and rubbed in, and w hich is needed in y o u r education
as m uch as any q u ality , is energy and a spirit for
accom plishing a rig h tfu l purpose against any and all
opposition. T h e saying, “ W hatever is w orth doing
at all is w orth doing w ell,” is certain ly tru e.
C hem aw a stan d s for en erg y in her pupils and desires
to in cu lcate in them a sp irit th a t accepts responsibil­
ity . Y oung people, n o th in g will stiffen your self-
respect so m uch as to feel responsible for w hatever
job is given you. T h e stay in g , or stick in g , qualities
are required in a job of w ork equally as m uch as in
football. If a boy is touched w ith a little yellow it
invariably comes out in a hard gam e of football, and
it also show s up in a job of w ork. S tay in g qualities
often m ake a better show ing in a person th an will the
fact th a t they are m erely quick or b r ig h t—especially
if d eterm in ation is lacking.
L et us again im press upon all of you the im portance
th a t attaches to your acceptance of your school w ork,
doing well and fully your part in the system —all sooner
or later to your ow n great benefit and the benefit of
y o u r associates. W e doubt if there is any educational
in stitu tio n in o u r service w hich has a more loyal crowd
of present day and ex -stu d e n ts th an Chem aw a. K eep
th is affection for your school, hold high her banners and
trad itio n s, th a t her glory may shine on ever m ore
b rig h tly w ith each passing year. In order to glorify
y o u r school you m ust glorify yourself. By w ork and
stu d y only can you do it.
