A fter a heated open house discussion of th e question th e ju d g es agreed w ith the negative th a t an old maid should seek her own w ay in the w orld. A fter listening carefully to o u r c ritic ’s rem arks we gave a few yells and adjourned. VARSITY LOSES TO MOUNT ANGEL Some people are su p erstitio u s w hile others are n o t, b u t nevertheless we feel som ew hat inclined to lean tow ard the fact th a t bad luckfollow s the crossing of ou r path by a black cat, at least some of th e b ask et ball boys feel th a t th ere is som e gloom in it, especially w hen ju st a week ago o u r varsity cleaned up on the U . of O. frosh who in tu rn defeated M t. A ngel by a com fortable score, w hile th e A ngels handed our team the lemon last S atu rd ay afternoon at Mt. A ngel w ith a good big sm ack th a t sounded som ething like 50 to 15. So it appears they have some reason to blam e th e cat. T h o u g h our team w as easily outclassed by th e v et eran and m uch larger college team they m ust be given cred it for p u ttin g u p a plucky fight, and th a t to th e finish, alth o u g h they annexed little in retu rn for their efforts. Team w ork was poor and b asketshooting worse and num erous passes th a t looked too high for a hum an be ing to in tercep t were hauled out of the air and invari- bly dribbled to the goal for baskets by the A ngels. G eorge and P h in n ey , our tw o forw ards, as well as our tw o guards, B uchert and A braham , h u n ted for th e basket d u rin g the en tire gam e and never left a spot untouched, b u t not once did th ey succeed in dro p p in g the leather th ro u g h th e hoop. T h ey eith er had a day off or the C atholics’ prayers were answ ered. DePoe played a whale of a gam e, both on the offense and the defense, and m uch as if o u r “ S panish a u n t” w as sittin g on the side line, th o u g h his team m ates w ere far below par. H e contributed eig h t of th e 15 points and each basket came as the result of excellent piv o tin g on h is p art. G eorge converted five out of six fouls and N orw est, w ho replaced B uchert, at g u ard , m ade two points. A retu rn gam e will be played here soon and w e ’ll bet a nickel to a d o u g h n u t there will be considerable difference in the scores, for o u r basketeers prom ise a O ur team played the h ig h school girls from W ood b u rn a tie gam e here last S atu rd ay n ig h t in th e fastest and m ost ex citin g g irls ’ gam e ever w itnessed by a loyal and yelling bunch of spectators. W oodburn has a fast and experienced team and have deleated all opponents th u s far th is season by large scores. Ju st a couple of w eeks ago they tu rn ed our team back from W oodburn by a m a tte r of a half a dozen points and were determ ined to repeat, but o u r “ d ark eyed S u san s” stepped on th e gas and led th e race till the very end of th e first half w hen W ood burn slipped into the lead by a couple of points. T h e second half opened u p like wild fire, w ith m ost of th e fire on our side, and baskets by W ilder and D ow nie put C hem aw a in the lead, w hich th e girls held u n til alm ost th e close of the gam e w hen a basket an d a foul, w hich was converted by W oodburn, tied th e gam e, 22 to 22. T h e ru les do not perm it girls to plav off tie gam es. T h e girls have done well so far th is season inasm uch as the team is com posed alm ost entirely of new and inexperienced players, and th u s far th is season have won one, lost one and tied one gam e. T h eir n ext gam e will be w ith S tay to n high school girls at S tayton.
