M r. G us W elch, of P ullm an College, was a guest
of Mr. and M rs. H au ser last week. M r. W elch has
proven him self one of the best football coaches in the
co u n try .
M rs. Canfield very charm ingly entertained a circle
ol friends on T h u rsd ay ev ening in honor of Mr. G us
W elch. R efreshm ents w ere served and a delightful
evening spent.

days show s th a t th e b uildings are being kept u p to
th eir usual h ig h stan d ard . In fact, Brewer H all,
w hich is a m ighty difficult b u ilding to keep in order,
fairly surpassed itself.
O ur good d isc ip lin arian and assistan t, M r. G eorge
W . Bent and M r. R eginald D ow nie, are alw ays on
th eir job and have created such a w holesom e, n atu ral,
hom elike atm osphere among th e boys th a t they are
b rin g in g ou t the best, w hich is most g ratify in g , and
good results are very ap p aren t.
T h e open session e n tertain m en t of the R eliance
L iterary Society, on account of th e basketball sch e­
dule, has been postponed from F rid ay , Jan u ary 14th,
to T h u rsd a y , Ja n u a ry 20th. T h e R eliance boys have
show n a good deal of “ p e p ” and in terest this year
and we may look forw ard to an evening of enjoym ent
w hen th a t en tertain m en t is staged.
W e are pleased to announce th a t Mrs. L illian Jeffreys
P etri, a concert pianist from P o rtlan d and of m any
years musical train in g u n d er th e g reat m asters of
E urope, will give a recital in the C heniaw a A u ditorium
n ex t F rid ay evening, Ja n . 14, at 8 o ’clock. It is
needless to add th a t an u n usually rare musical treat
is in store for those who atten d . In v itatio n is e x ­
tended to all.

T he article speaks of the m any years Mr. Loos passed
as bandm astei at Chem aw a. D u rin g these years he
made m any warm friends both in and out of musical
circles. H e is a m usical en th u siast if ever th ere was
one and beyond doubt L aporte will enjoy m any fine
concerts under his direction. A large num ber of
C hem aw a friends rejoice to hear of his success.

T hirty-five of the new girls of M cBride H all enjoyed
the hospitality of Mrs. H all on Sunday evening after
chapel in order to get better acquainted. T his little
affair took on th e n atu re of a “ s tu n t” party, as th e
g irls called for volunteers. Songs, stories and reci­
tatio n s were given. Ice cream and cake w ere served,
and a very inform al and pleasant hour and a half was
enjoyed. Mrs. H all was assisted by Miss F ra tis and
Miss Sw anson. A uie N erguson and M artha T itseler

D u rin g Sunday evening chapel the orchestra played
“ Deep R iv er” — A N egro S p iritu al, C ruz M cDaniels
gave as a baritone so’.o “ T he Lost C h o rd ” by Sullivan,

as a cello solo, the choir gave “ T hy Sweet V oice” by
E v an s
'l'lie exercises were closed by a fine talk from
S u p t. H all. T h e value of asm ile, both to the individual
and all m an k ind, was most ably set fo rth . T he sm ile
is th e su n sh in e of life; it dissipates the shadow , it
creates an atm osphere all its own; it m akes m en and
women, boys and girls, m ore w illing to serve and
renders them im m une to fatigue. It was a splendid
talk — one of S upt. H a ll’s best.

O ur first baskeball gam e of th e season was played
here last S atu rday n ig h t against the A m erican Legion
team of Mill C ity, defeating them 19 to 5
T h e Legion team showed considerable fight and team
w ork and often passed the ball around the floor as
th o u g h they had no one to oppose them ; but in a l­
m ost every instance their throw s to the basket were
warded off by ou r g uards, N ix and L iljegren, who
deserve special m ention for the way in w hich they
played th eir position. N ix also converted 11 of the
19 points made. S hepard, center, scored six and
Dow nie tw o.
T h e Legion has a stro n g team , having won all th eir
gam es before com ing here.
A lthough every m an of last y e a r’s team is back on
th e squad, yet the nervousness of the early season
gam es was very prom inent last S aturday and M anager
Bent is busy arran g in g another gam e before sending
his team against the U niversity of O regon n ex t F riday
and S atu rd ay at E ugene.
As a p relim inary to the ’varsity contest the girls of
th e senior and sophom ore classes played an in terestin g
gam e, th e sophom ore girls w inning by a 22 to 4 score.
