LARGE CLASS CONFIRM ED F o r some tim e F a th e r G all, who h as charge of the religious in stru ctio n of C atholic children at Chem aw a, was busy p rep arin g a large class for confirm ation here on Jan u ary 2nd. A t 9:50 a. m . R ig h t Reverend A rchbishop C hristie arrived from P o rtlan d to take charge of th e confirm ation. O ur band and a large num ber of stu d e n ts and em ployes, together w ith num erous visitors, m et his G race at th e depot and to th e accom panim ent of band m usic he was first es corted to th e residence of S u p t. and Mrs H all, from w hence after a brief visit he and his party repaired to th e C atholic chapel w here th e confirm ation service followed. T h e class for confirm ation was large, nu m b erin g 70. F ath e r T hom as and F a th e r Leo w ere here from M t. A ngel to assist in the confirm ation. D u rin g the services th e A rchbishop m ade an address w hich was respectfully and atten tiv ely listened to, and w hich was also m ost able and profound. T h e address and th e delivery, the kindly and fatherly a ttitu d e of th e de liverer, added to the A rch b ish o p ’s already large circle of frien d s and adm irers at Chem aw a. A t th e close of the religious exercises his G race, F a th e rs G all, Leo and T hom as— the last three nam ed are all from M t. A ngel— were all in v ited to ilie house of S u p t. and M rs. H all w here they w ere d in n er g uests and w here a most d elightful tim e was enjoyed by all u n til 2 p. ra., w hen th e A rchbishop was com pelled to re tu rn to P o rtlan d . V isits of A rchbishop C hristie to C hem aw a are rare but they are events w hich we enjoy and never forget. BASK ETBALL F or a num ber of years our industrial d epartm ents have put o u t basketball team s to battle for th e school cham pionship d u rin g th e C hristm as holidays. T h is year the academ ic classes took a swung at it and m ade a great big success of the e n tire week. C om petition was keen in every instance and determ ination to win was displayed very plainly bv every team . T herefore, we had some of th e best gam es ever w itnessed here on o u r floor. T his system has not onlv produced some of the best players C hem aw a has ever had, but it has also instilled a g reat deal of in terest in the gam e th ro u g h o u t th e school. In the first gam e of th e series the high school girls proved too m uch for th e seniors; defeating them in a one-sided gam e, 31 to 4, b u t th e seniors m anaged to beat the ju n io rs in a hotly contested gam e, 10 to 3. T h e unbeatable boys of the senior class kept th e ir colors flying high all w eek. D efeating th e high school boys 16 to 6 and nosing out ahead of th e ju n iors 10 to 7. T h is gam e was un d o u b ted ly th e to u g h est battle of th e w eek. F o r 20 long m inutes in the first half both team s battled on w ith o u t either team m ak in g a field basket. N o t because th e men w ere u n able to h it the basket, but because each man was so closely guarded th a t he did not get a chance to shoot. T h e first half ended 1 to 0 in favor of the ju n io rs. T h e girls of th e sophom ore class walked off w ith a 12 to 3 victory over th e freshm en; w hile th e boys of th e freshm en class tu rn ed the table and w alloped th e sophies 42 to 12. T h e big stru g g le of th e w eek was played between th e A laskans and th e A ll-S tars of the school. A large and en th u siastic crow d tu rn e d out to see th is ex c itin g gam e and were kept on th e ir toes d u rin g the first half as th e score see-saw ed back and forth, first one side leading and th e n th e o ther. T h e first half ended 18 to 15 in favor of the S tates. T h e second half started fast and furiously, but the S tates gradually pulled away from the hoopers from th e n orth, defeating them 34 to 20. T he Brew er H all-M itchell H all contest closed th e gam es for the week. B rew er H all w inning by a 12 to 10 score. DOMESTIC SCIENCE NOTES One of the largest dinn ers of this year was given by th e Ju n io rs to th e Senior class on S aturday. T h e girls all appreciate the g ift given to the de p artm e n t by Mrs. H all. I t will be a great help to us in setv ing our m eals. Both divisions of the Dom estic Science girls were in th e d ep artm en t d u rin g C h ristm as w eek, b ak in g cakes and carry in g on th e ir usual duties. T h e girls were real busy before C hristm as week m aking popcorn balls for all the pupils and also m ak in g cakes for the g irls ’ reception.
