T h e man or w om an, boy or girl, who does not learn to create his happiness as he goes along, out of each d a y ’s wTo rk , w ith all its little annoyances and disappointm ents, has th u s far missed th e secret of living. I t is out of the daily round of d u ties w hile at C hem aw a and elsew here th a t you get th e honey of life. It is not enough to ex tra ct happiness from ideal conditions—anybody can do th a t— b u t it is th e person who is m aster of self who can get happiness o u t of every kind of condition. H appiness does not depend upon favorable su rro u n d in g s, but upon th e sta te of th e m ind. T h e tro u b le w ith all of us is th a t we e x pect too m uch from big th in g s—th e u n u su al h a p p e n ings— and we overlook th e little th in g s from w hich we m ig h t ex tra ct com forts and d elights. If we are ever to be happy it will be because we create happiness rig h t w here we are. H alf of th e joy of living is in th e little th in g s as they come along. Few people ever see th e id en tity betw een th e ir lives an d tim e. T hey seem to th in k they can w aste tim e in all sorts of foolish ways, and even in dissipation, w ith o u t w asting life, but the two are inseparable. R em em ber, th at w hen you throw aw ay an evening, or day, or do infinitely worse th a n throw it aw ay by in d u lg in g in pleasures w hich dem oralize and tend to d egenerate your character and to form vicious habits, you are de liberately flinging aw ay a p art of y o u r very life. W hen you grow older you will give an y th in g to redeem the precious tim e th a t you have squandered. R eally, th ere is only one way to live, and th a t is to sta rt out every m o rn in g w ith a firm resolution to get th e m ost out of th a t d ay — to live it to th e fu llest e x tent possible. N o m atter w hat happens, or does not happen, w hat comes or does n o t com e, resolve th a t you will e x tra c t from every experience of the day som ething good, som eth in g w hich will m ake you wiser and show you how to m ake fewer m istakes to m orrow . Say to yourself, “ T h is day I begin a new life. I will forget ev ery th in g in th e past th a t caused m e pain, griel or d isg rac e.” Yes, resolve every 1 No. 12 W ednesday, Decem ber 22, 1920 m o rn in g th a t you will get the most out of th a t day, n o t o u t of som e day in th e fu tu re w hen you are better off, w hen you have outgrow n your difficulties, but re solve to enjoy yourself today and not to let th e hideous shadow s of tom orrow , the forebodings and th e th in g s you dread, rob you of w hat is yours today— your in alienable rig h t to be happy today. H ave a little h ea rt-to -h ea rt talk w ith yourself every m orning, and say, “ It does not m atter w hat comes or goes today th e re is one th in g of w hich I am sure, and th a t is th a t I am going to get th e m ost possible out of th e day. I am not going to allow a n y th in g to rob me of my h a p piness, or of my rig h t to live th is day from begin n in g to end and not m erely ex ist. I shall not allow any annoyance, any h ap p en in g , any circum stance w hich m ay cross my p ath to rob m e of my peace of m iud. I will not be u n h ap p y today, no m atter w hat occurs. I am g o in g to live the d ay com pletely. O nly happy th o u g h ts, joy th o u g h ts, only th e friends of my peace, com fort, happiness and success shall find e n te rta in m ent w ithin me th is d a y .” A clean, optim istic sta rt like this every m oruing will q u ick ly revolutionize o n e’s outlook on life and will increase o n e’s ability to live trem endously. I t is ju st a question of m asterin g your th o u g h ts and m ak in g a path for a new happiness habit. Y esterday has gone; tom orrow is b u t an expectancy; there is no tim e for us to act b u t in the living p resent. T h ere is som ething w rong w’ith the en tire view of life in w hich jo y , gladness, peace and prosperity are not expressed.
