TH E JOYS OF LIFE
S tu d en ts, readers, th is is near th e holiday season,
and if you are happy it will be because you create
happiness out of your present su rro u n d in g s, yo u r e n
vironm ent, w ith all its little vexatious, cares and c o n
ditions. T h e man or w om an, boy or girl, who does
not learn to create his happiness as he goes along, out
of each d a y ’s wTo rk , w ith all its little annoyances and
disappointm ents, has th u s far missed th e secret of
living. I t is out of the daily round of d u ties w hile at
C hem aw a and elsew here th a t you get th e honey of
life. It is not enough to ex tra ct happiness from ideal
conditions—anybody can do th a t— b u t it is th e person
who is m aster of self who can get happiness o u t of
every kind of condition. H appiness does not depend
upon favorable su rro u n d in g s, but upon th e sta te of
th e m ind. T h e tro u b le w ith all of us is th a t we e x
pect too m uch from big th in g s—th e u n u su al h a p p e n
ings— and we overlook th e little th in g s from w hich we
m ig h t ex tra ct com forts and d elights.
If we are ever to be happy it will be because we
create happiness rig h t w here we are. H alf of th e joy
of living is in th e little th in g s as they come along.
Few people ever see th e id en tity betw een th e ir lives an d
tim e. T hey seem to th in k they can w aste tim e in all
sorts of foolish ways, and even in dissipation, w ith o u t
w asting life, but the two are inseparable. R em em ber,
th at w hen you throw aw ay an evening, or day, or do
infinitely worse th a n throw it aw ay by in d u lg in g in
pleasures w hich dem oralize and tend to d egenerate
your character and to form vicious habits, you are de
liberately flinging aw ay a p art of y o u r very life. W hen
you grow older you will give an y th in g to redeem the
precious tim e th a t you have squandered.
R eally, th ere is only one way to live, and th a t is to
sta rt out every m o rn in g w ith a firm resolution to get
th e m ost out of th a t d ay — to live it to th e fu llest e x
tent possible. N o m atter w hat happens, or does not
happen, w hat comes or does n o t com e, resolve th a t
you will e x tra c t from every experience of the day
som ething good, som eth in g w hich will m ake you
wiser and show you how to m ake fewer m istakes to
m orrow . Say to yourself, “ T h is day I begin a new
life. I will forget ev ery th in g in th e past th a t caused
m e pain, griel or d isg rac e.” Yes, resolve every

m o rn in g th a t you will get the most out of th a t day,
n o t o u t of som e day in th e fu tu re w hen you are better
off, w hen you have outgrow n your difficulties, but re
solve to enjoy yourself today and not to let th e hideous
shadow s of tom orrow , the forebodings and th e th in g s
you dread, rob you of w hat is yours today— your in
alienable rig h t to be happy today. H ave a little
h ea rt-to -h ea rt talk w ith yourself every m orning, and
say, “ It does not m atter w hat comes or goes today
th e re is one th in g of w hich I am sure, and th a t is th a t
I am going to get th e m ost possible out of th e day. I
am not going to allow a n y th in g to rob me of my h a p
piness, or of my rig h t to live th is day from begin n in g
to end and not m erely ex ist. I shall not allow any
annoyance, any h ap p en in g , any circum stance w hich
m ay cross my p ath to rob m e of my peace of m iud.
I will not be u n h ap p y today, no m atter w hat occurs.
I am g o in g to live the d ay com pletely. O nly happy
th o u g h ts, joy th o u g h ts, only th e friends of my peace,
com fort, happiness and success shall find e n te rta in
m ent w ithin me th is d a y .”
A clean, optim istic sta rt like this every m oruing
will q u ick ly revolutionize o n e’s outlook on life and
will increase o n e’s ability to live trem endously. I t is
ju st a question of m asterin g your th o u g h ts and m ak
in g a path for a new happiness habit.
Y esterday has gone; tom orrow is b u t an expectancy;
there is no tim e for us to act b u t in the living p resent.
T h ere is som ething w rong w’ith the en tire view of life
in w hich jo y , gladness, peace and prosperity are not
expressed.
