BASK ETBALL
F or a num ber of years our industrial d epartm ents
have put o u t basketball team s to battle for th e school
cham pionship d u rin g th e C hristm as holidays. T h is
year the academ ic classes took a swung at it and m ade
a great big success of the e n tire week. C om petition
was keen in every instance and determ ination to win
was displayed very plainly bv every team . T herefore,
we had some of th e best gam es ever w itnessed here on
o u r floor. T his system has not onlv produced some
of the best players C hem aw a has ever had, but it has
also instilled a g reat deal of in terest in the gam e
th ro u g h o u t th e school.
In the first gam e of th e series the high school girls
proved too m uch for th e seniors; defeating them in a
one-sided gam e, 31 to 4, b u t th e seniors m anaged to
beat the ju n io rs in a hotly contested gam e, 10 to 3.
T h e unbeatable boys of the senior class kept th e ir
colors flying high all w eek. D efeating th e high
school boys 16 to 6 and nosing out ahead of th e ju n
iors 10 to 7. T h is gam e was un d o u b ted ly th e to u g h
est battle of th e w eek. F o r 20 long m inutes in the
first half both team s battled on w ith o u t either team
m ak in g a field basket. N o t because th e men w ere u n
able to h it the basket, but because each man was so
closely guarded th a t he did not get a chance to shoot.
T h e first half ended 1 to 0 in favor of the ju n io rs.
T h e girls of th e sophom ore class walked off w ith a
12 to 3 victory over th e freshm en; w hile th e boys of
th e freshm en class tu rn ed the table and w alloped th e
sophies 42 to 12.
T h e big stru g g le of th e w eek was played between
th e A laskans and th e A ll-S tars of the school. A large
and en th u siastic crow d tu rn e d out to see th is ex c itin g
gam e and were kept on th e ir toes d u rin g the first half
as th e score see-saw ed back and forth, first one side
leading and th e n th e o ther. T h e first half ended 18
to 15 in favor of the S tates. T h e second half started
fast and furiously, but the S tates gradually pulled
away from the hoopers from th e n orth, defeating
them 34 to 20.
T he Brew er H all-M itchell H all contest closed th e
gam es for the week. B rew er H all w inning by a 12
