A hobby of th e rig h t sort is a fine th in g for a boy Y oung children are rarely lazy. T hey are, if left or g irl— in fact, a respectable hobby will harm no-one, free to follow th e ir ow n im pulses, usually to be found y o u n g or old. A hobby m ay be defined as som ething doing som ething for th e very love of it. M any tim es th a t m akes a stro n g appeal to its possessor. T h en they are in th eir childish fancies and im aginations fol we are safe in th e assum ption that th e prosecution of low ing most rational callings— the girl m aking clothes a hobby m ay involve labor, and let us hope th a t it for her doll baby, th e boy ru n n in g a stream of w ater may be labor to a good en d . It will be a fine th in g for those w ho tak e up so-called hobbies to use d is in the im aginary irrigation of his cabbage patch. All is real to childhood and all is energy and in d u stry if u n cretion in the m atter and select “ th a t som eth in g on ham pered by elders. Can we older people not em ulate w hich to expend th o u g h t and energy w ith a view to its the child to advantage in m any ways? A t least in possible g ro w th in to a fu tu re of respectable proportions sh ak in g off th a t lazy feeliug w hich resu lts largely for its possessor. O r, if a carpenter, get it into y o u r head ledge of p h o to g rap h y is necessary in en g rav in g as th a t you w ould sooner be a carp en ter th an a n y th in g carried on largely now -a days. O r, let us suppose else in the w orld and th a t you will be a good c a rp e n th a t a m usical in stru m e n t rep resen ts th e hobby, in t e r ,” too, th e very best w ithin your pow er. If teaching is distasteful th ere is a o u r school, b oth vocational and academ ic, for both field for professional p laying in ensem ble or as an in boys and girls alike.
