W e consider not w hat we do, bu t ru sh headlong into a given th in g re g a rd less of w here we are to la n d . W e m ay place o u r selves in a m ost absurd position and prove a disgrace to ourselves and a hum iliation to our friends. T h e w orst feature of th is ro u g h and u n co u th “ ru sh in g i n ” habit is th a t ev en tu ally we shall cease to have any friends w orthy the nam e. Bad m anners have alw ays been the source of protest and indig n atio n on th e p art of refined people. T he ruffian, the buffoon, th e coarse and v u lg ar, have no place in th e schem e of w ell-ordered affairs nor are they ever to have. People of p rinciple, of self-respect, of pride, and of co m m u n ity sta n d in g will not welcome in th e ir com pany o r society one w hose m an n ers a d vertise him as a low fellow . F ar from it—so far from it in fact th a t th e y will “ lend a h a n d ” in sen d in g him hence. “ L ike begets lik e !” T h is is as tru e as the law of g rav ity . T h ere is a double reason for this: In the first place good people, those of good m an n ers and rig h t in stin cts, can n o t avoid an in h e re n t sense of resentm ent w hen some “ fool ru sh es in ” upon th em . T he second p art of th is double reason is th a t an ill- m annered and coarse person feels m ost ill at ease in the presence of a lady or g en tlem an . N atu rally th ere is absolutely no affinity betw een them . T h ere is m ore air and lig h t th e h ig h er you clim b in a personal w ay. T h ere is m ore satisfaction w ith self w hen self is striv in g for the better th in g s. T ry first to cultivate w ithin yourself a m anner of courtesy to all. Get th is well g ro u n d ed , for it is necessary for your real success in all th a t is to follow. As a “ follow u p ” be stu d io u s, be observant, be in d u strio u s, be saving, be careful not to become one of those “ fools who rush in w here angels fear to tr e a d .” Can you follow th e above advice? W ould you n o t be benefitted if you did? C ould you in any way pos sible lose by subscribing to th e above ru les of conduct? Bear in m ind, th a t to become a sta r m em ber, an h o n orary mem bei if you will, in the Society of Good M anners and R ig h t E ndeavor will not cost you a No. 27 cen t—ju st a little effort. Sum m ing all up, can you th in k of a n y th in g th at offers more for the effort re q u ired than a personal course in good m anners? You will gain m uch and lose n o th in g . Can we not, by all u n itin g , m ake o f C hem aw a a place of refinem ent, of c u ltu r e —a place w here all will be advanced and benefitted in the tru est sense? C u l tu re m u st come from w ithin. Self-criticism and self developm ent are the seeds from w hich cu ltu re springs. W ith the advent of cu ltu re bad m anners disappear. G E N E R A L IT E M S Duane Kimball, Reporter H arry W heeler, a m em ber of last y ea rs’ Ju n io r class, paid C hem aw a friends and classm ates a visit last S u n day. T h e lum ber th at was once a porch on Brewer H all is now being saw ed up for stove wood at the wood shed. Mr. Bent has rearranged his gym nasium classes and they are now busy prep arin g for th eir an n u al e x hibition. T h e painters have given the em ployes’ club b u ild ing a new coat of w hite paint which adds to the a p pearance of this building very m uch. Em il F reem an and Fred W ilder, vocational carp en ters, have been g ettin g a good deal of practical e x p e r ience on the south porch of Brew er H all. Since th e old porch on the south side of Brewer H all has been torn dow n and moved aw ay, the rooms on th a t side of the building have much more su n lig h t. L ast T uesday a party was sent out to clean our back yard. A good job was done, yet there was not m uch to do as no place about Chem aw a is allowed to get very d irty . A train in g table for the track boys was com m enced W ednesday m orning. T he boys at this table are: Janies C hoate, G eorge T hom as, A rth u r Johnson, A xel Johnson, Roy N uckolls, C larence E dw ards, P hilip M any H ides, A lbert Spearson, C harles E der and E arl Potts.
