T H E C H E M A W A A M E R IC A N LOCAL Mrs. M cIntosh, who has been v isitin g her d au g h ter, M rs. Janies, for the past m onth, left for her hom e in W isconsin on M onday. On M onday m o rn in g the various details at th e school changed, b u t all seem s to be ru n n in g sm oothly about the plant even so soon after the rotation of the w o rk ers. So far A pril w eather has been n o th in g to boast of. E aster S u n d ay did not entice so m any fine h ats and bonnets into the open as is custom ary. T h e w eather was " ta b o o ” for h ats. A nd now Julia Grom off, of our class of ‘19, m akes a record in Salem H ig h w hich places h er on th e H onor Roll. A gain we are proud of our stu d e n ts who do th in g s. Mrs. Bradley presented a b eautiful ecru linen cen ter piece for th e large library table in th e living room at C ottage H all. T h is is a nice little com plim ent and th e occupants of th a t b u ild in g appreciate it. T h e " F re s h ie s ” have been w ritin g invitations, acceptances and d eclin atio n s in th e ir E n g lish work recently. I t is said one of th e teachers intercepted an in v itatio n , th in k in g it w as a note, and ex p lan atio n s followed. D r. W edge gave one of his stro n g ta lk s to th e s tu d e n t body on M onday n ig h t last. H e held his a u d i ence breathless th ro u g h o u t his discourse. V ery few people have th e facu lty of in te re stin g our stu d en ts as has Dr. W edge. M rs. S herm an and Mrs. V an d ag rift en tertain ed at S unday d in n er in honor of M rs. Brickell and Miss E rm a F re ela n d . Besides th e hostesses and honor g u ests there were Dr. and M rs. W edge, S u p erin ten d en t and M rs. H all, M r. an d M rs. B radley. T he little folks of the first grade, Miss Judd teacher, presented to M r. and M rs. H all some beautiful E aster g reetin g cards on F rid a y , th e w ork of various m em bers of th e class. T hese card s were artistically dec orated and w’ould do credit to a m uch h ig h er g rad e. T h e chapel services last S u nday evening were of th e usual excellen t ch aracter. S u p t. H all was in charge an d th e program of th e ev ening was as follows: T h e orchestra played " O n M ountain H e ig h ts ” by K iesler, the B oys’ O ctette san g *‘P o ’ L ittle L a m b ” by P arks, M arina N elson sang " T h a t T um ble-D ow n S h ack ” by Sanders. W illiam F razier gave a recitatio n , th e choir sang " C h ris t A ro se” by Low ry, Mr. T u rn e y gave "R o ck ed in th e C radle of th e D eep” by K n ig h t as a double bass solo. R ev. M r. Seeley of P o rtlan d was present and at th e request of S u p t. H all gave a very nice little talk ap p ro p riate to th e occasion. Mr. Seeley is no stra n g e r at C hem aw a and is alw ays a w el com e visitor. H e is in ch arg e of the hom e m issionary w ork of O regon. All of these a r ti cles w’ere labeled in plain le tte rs so th e audience w ould not m istake an a p p a re n t ch air for a real ch a ir w hen it wyas a bed. T h e actors proceeded to give a very cred itable perform ance of the little dram atization w hich th ey had m ade of th is story of O . H e n ry ’s. Roy N u ck olls and C larence E d w ard s w ere th e general m anagers; M abie B lodgett and T heresa G ua w ere the ad v e rtisin g and program com m ittee; E dw in L iljegren and C lara M orais w ere property directors and o th er m em bers of the class w’ere u n d erstu d ies for the actors. It was a good piece of w ork and w as done unassisted from sta rt to finish by th e Ju n io rs. SENIOR NOTES Dr. W edge talked to th e S eniors on T h u rsd ay a fte r noon. A ll enjoyed the talk. T h e Class of ’20 has had 20 m em bers present all th is w’eek— everybody w’ell and happy. M ary W are, L ouise S ilverthorne and Effie Davis gave some pleasing " s tr in g m u sic” on F rid a y . H a ttie M artin and M arguerite C ham berlin each read good them es of class in terest on the w eekly program . E lizabeth M ontgom ery recited " W a d in ’ in de C reek ” in a very e n te rta in in g w ay at class m eeting. Miss S kipton arran g ed for the S eniors to celebrate E aster by form ing the 1920 table in th e d in in g room . Up to th e present every m em ber of th e class of ’20 is safe for g rad u atio n in Ju n e , b u t— O h, those final exam inations! F rid ay was th e last report d ay b u t one before com m encem ent and it found th e Seniors busily averaging and re-av eraging grades to see how near they are to q u alify in g for those diplom as. G us G artiez told th e class about th e discovery n ear S an ta Fe, New M exico, recently, of a w hite m arble house w’hich had been buried ages ago in a lava o v er flow’. T h e house contained tw o skeletons, supposed ly of pre-historic people.
