W allace Beebe has a force of boys cleaning out th e canal w est of th e railroad. T h is is necessary in order to properly drain the onion land. W allace is a good boy and is alw ays tru stw o rth y . May H anniff sold th e greatest num ber of tickets for the burlesque, w hile M ary A rq u ette and B ertha L ee were close seconds. M rs. Daly and her g irls deserve m uch credit for in te re st displayed. T h e com m ittee on inspection last week w ere very com plim entary of th e well kept appearance and cleanliness of all b u ild in g s and cam pus. M erle S m ith , a sergeant in th e Signal Corp, stationed at Cam p Lew is, stopped off at C hem aw a on his re tu rn from his hom e at R iverside, C alifornia, last week to v isit w ith S u p erin ten d en t H all and fam ily. T h e h ig h school stu d e n ts appreciate very m uch the d ain ty and varied lunches prepared for them each day by the dom esitic science d ep artm en t. T he best p a rt of th is is th a t th e re is no cessation of th e ap p etizin g lunches. T he dom estic Science d ep artm en t en tertain ed th e O regon U niversity baseball squad last S aturday for din n er and su p p e r. L eona John and Julia Mills did th e serving, w hile th e th ird year v o c a tio n a l prepared the m eals. M r. Jo h n B. P a rk e r, one of the first stu d e n ts at C hem aw a, died at Y akim a on F rid ay . T h e rem ains w ere taken to L vle, W ash in g to n , for in te rm en t. H is d a u g h te r Josephine wdio is a stu d e n t at C hem aw a a t tended the funeral. R obert A lpheus, who is located at G uam , one of the L adrone Islands, w rites sta tin g th a t he is in perfect health and is en joying him self very m uch. H e states th a t he w ill probably be stationed at this Islan d u n til the end of the w ar. Y esterday a team from Salem canvassed C hem aw a for p u rchasers of L ib erty Bonds. In about an h o u r and a-lialf our em ployees subscribed th ro u g h these gentlem en for about $2,009 w orth of bonds. T h a t certain ly is not bad. C hem aw a had a coal fam ine last w eek, caused by in ability of th e M endota and O lym pia m ines to su p ply the proper g rad e of coal. H ow ever we have received th ree cars since S atu rd ay and ev ery th in g is m oving in good shape again. T he gross receipts for th e Sigm a Phi mock w edding was $65.65. A fter p ay in g th e expenses consisting of ice cream cones, eggs, etc., for the icecream am o u n t ing to $4.60, and $8.00 for crepe paper, h at fram es, etc. .th e net profits am ounted to $53.05. T h is fund is to be used for Red Cross and war w ork if possible in some way for th e C hem aw a soldier boys.
