THAT R IN G T A IL CIRCUS
A ccording to Solom on, th e wise m an, there is ‘ ‘n o th ­
in g new u n d er the s u n .” W e no longer believe th at
old saw , for have we not seen th e m am m oth R in g ­
tailed C ircus of B ent & Loos? It certainly was new
—th e re was never a n y th in g like it before.
P rom p tly at 7:30 on S atu rd ay evening a blast of
tru m p ets and beating of d ru m s sm ote our ears and all
of us stam peded for th e street down w hich th e m en ­
agerie an d bands of th e circus w ere headed. W ith a
tru e regard for the custom s and trad itio n s of th e circus
business, M r. B ent headed th e parade in a toy w agon
draw n by four h ig h -sp irited boys. . A s he rode along
he m egaphoned th e m u ltitu d e of th e m ag n itu d e of his
circu s. T h ere w ere w agon-loads of caged anim als,
hum an and otherw ise, th ere w ere clow ns on horseback,
th ere was an elep h an t well groom ed and fresh from
th e ju n g les, th e re was a clown band w ith M r. Loos as
“ leading la d y ,” w hose m ake-up, especially in th e line
of p a in t, seem ed rig h t up to th e m in u te, and who, a l­
th o u g h th ere w as n eith er rain nor sunshine, clung
tenaciously to an um brella. I t was a splendid parade
and its sta rtlin g features caused the crow d to yell itself
hoarse.
T h e various “ ac ts” w ere featured in the g y m n a­
siu m . T h ere were a series of h air-raisin g acrobatic
feats w hich held us all spell-bound. M r. Bent was
“ sp ie ler” an d rin g -m aster. T h e re was a “ leap for
life ” w hich w as a m ost th rillin g affair. A unique
and m ost pleasing n um ber w as th e “ H u la D an ce,” a
la H aw aiian, by four little girls. T h is was so a t­
tractive and so sp len d id ly ex ecu ted th a t th e g irls
w ere com pelled to respond to an encore. O ne of the
m ost strik in g features of th e ev en in g was the act of
th e leading lady (M r. Loos) and th e train ed elep h an t.
As a han d ler an d tra in e r of elep h an ts Mr. Loos has
no superio rs and few equals. H e m ade th e poor old
elep h an t w altz and fo x -tro t regardless of th e fact th a t
its forelegs had no idea w hat its hindlegs were “ up
t o .” F in ally the anim al becam e capricious and sat
dow n on th e leading lady. T h is concluded th e “ r in g ”
w ork and w as followed by a ru sh for th e “ sid esh o w ,”
th e attractio n s of w hich were being loudly heralded
by a spieler.
H ere we saw ev ery th in g th a t should be in a sid e­

show — a tall m an, m idgets, a snake charm er, and a
fat lad y — th e la tte r looked like she had H ooverized in
vain. T h e w hole affair was a g ran d success. E v ery ­
body, from th e sm allest child up, took hold w ith a vim
and got into the sp irit of it in great shape. I t was for
th e benefit of ath letics and a good sum , $53.11, was
realized from adm issions, sales of toy balloons, pop­
co rn , p ean u ts, pink lem onade, etc. E special th an k s
are due to M r. B ent, Mr. and M rs. Loos, whose efforts
co n trib u ted so largely to th e success of th e affair. W e
w ill never forget the day th a t we saw B ent & L oos’
R in g tail C ircus.
