A G eorge W ash in g to n B irth d ay luncheon was given by th e D om estic Science class on W ednesday last. Covers w ere laid for ten. T h e table was decorated w ith sm all flags and em blem s p in n ed around th e snow y clo th as a border. T h e centerpiece was th e stu m p of a ch e rry tree w ith a large clu ster of red ch erries on top and su rro u n d ed by sm all flags and em blem s. T h e place cards w ere red, w hite and blue h atch ets. In th e alcove of th e d in in g room on a sm all table w as a larg e stu m p of a ch erry tree, an d G eorge W a sh in g to n rep resen ted by a statu e w ith a h atch et in his h an d ready to cut th e fam ous tree. T h e A m erican flag gracefu lly draped above, m ade a very realistic an d im pressive p ictu re. T h e p atrio tic m otif w as carried o u t as m uch as possible in th e luncheon m enu. H ostesses were Ju lia Mills and V elth a F razier. T h e serv in g was done by K ath erin e W ilder and Ju lia Grom off, w hile L eona Jo h n , L ydia B auer, E lizabeth R ainville and Rose Sim m ons w ere th e lead in g cooks. LITERARY SOCIETIES T h e E xcelsiors m et last W ednesday in full force w ith P resid en t D arnell in the chair, who opened th e m eet in g w ith a sn ap p y address. T h e program w as a sh o rt one, co n sistin g of a recitation by F ran cis Boyce; a m an dolin solo by L v condra Squartzoff; read in g of news from th e w’ar fro n t by G eorge B arrett. T h e advisor addressed th e society, em phasizing the necessity for better p re p aratio n of th e assem bly exercises. M r. M itchell, the official v isitor, gave a brief talk show ing his ap p re ciation of th e w ork the boys were doing. T h e debate given by the R eliance boys show ed th at they had p u t m uch th o u g h t and w ork on th e ir p rep ar atio n for th e evening. T h e question was, “ Resolved, T h a t W ash ington was a g reater m an th a n L in c o ln .” T h e affirm ative debaters were W ade M inthorne and A llen S hepard and negative speakers, Jam es T odd and Joe G ale. H enderson T atsh am a m ade a good song leader. A llan S hepard added his bit of fun to th e eve n in g by a v o lu n tary reading. T h e W in o na society presented a program w hich was en th u siastically received by the m em bers. T h e selec tion read by Rose Sim m ons show ed careful preparation, as d id the recitation delivered by L ottie W ilson. Tw o g u ita r solos and a num ber of riddles w ere th e am u se m en t features and were thoroughly enjoyed. M r. John Brow n, th e official visitor, addressed th eso cietv and was loudly applauded. PUPILS’ NEWS ITEMS T h e h o rtic u ltu re detail will begin sp ray in g th e fru it trees in th e sm all orchard at once. T h e second and th ird year vocational girls are s tu d y in g fats and yeast at th e dom estic science. M r. W estley w as com pelled to “ lay off” for a few days on account of a severe attack of th e la grip p e. S arah B lodgett, after being here eig h t years, left a few weeks ago on account of ill health and has reach ed her hom e at A rlee, M ontana, safely. M r. S m ith , our disciplinarian and physical director, is busy ju s t now d rillin g the stu d en ts in gym nastic exercises, p rep arin g for an exhibition on M arch 3rd. T h e stu d e n ts in the eighth grade are en th u siastic about th e final exam in atio n s to take place th e first of Ju n e . T hey expect to secure an average of 90 per cent. M r. H e n ry L ange, assistant engineer, departed from C hem aw a on F eb ru ary 20th. W hile here he m ade m any friends w ho wish him success in all fu tu re u n d erta k in g s. G eorge L aw son left on M onday for Seattle to visit his sister for one m onth. She is an invalid and re quires his assistance. G eorge is a fine boy and we miss him both in th e band and harness shop. Isabel G ardipe, an ex -stu d e n t of C hem aw a, w rites from her hom e at Roy, M ontana, th a t Lucy O ’Brien is m arried to Irv in g Fitzsim m ons, both of Coberg, M ontana.
