M itchell was called upon and begged to be excused on account of the lateness of th e h o u r. M r. M itchell has been at Chem aw a for a num ber of years and is identified w ith its progress. M rs. M. M. E stabrook paid a high trib u te to th e stu d e n t body, th a t th e ir ability was m arked and th a t they need not take second place w ith an y race— in art and general efficiency—for Chem aw a pupils who atten d the Business College and H ig h School in Salem are in variably leading th eir classes. Splendid rep o rts are being received, not only in regard to academ ic w ork, but in general d ep o rtm en t. W hat those stu d e n ts can do others m ay do. M rs. E stabrook paid a high com plim ent to Chem aw a. H er address w as good. Mr. S m ith m ade a “ get to g e th er” talk w hich aro u sed loyalty and en th u siasm . H e spoke of how he loved his old school at C arlisle and urged th e stu d e n ts at C hem aw a to stan d by th eir school; he urged them to m ake th e best of th eir advantages and succeed here at Chem aw a, for unless th ey are a success in school th ey are very likely not to be a success thereafter. H is talk was stro n g and to the point. M rs. H all said th a t C hem aw a was n o t com posed of the em ployees of the past, nor th e em ployes of the present, nor th e stu d e n ts of the present, th a t th e men and w om en, her alu m n i, whom she has sent o u t from her doors equipped to fight life’s battles, and those whom she will co n tin u e to send o u t in the fu tu re , co n stitu te th e real living Chem aw a. She urged th a t we all stan d loyally to g eth er, the C hem aw a of the past, Chem aw a of th e p resen t, Chem aw a of th e fu tu re , for one gran d , big, living Chem aw a. T h e m eeting closed w ith spontaneous and ro u sin g school veils and songs by th e alum ni, who were seated in a body in the front seats of th e au d ito riu m , each m em ber w earing th eir class colors as well as the C h e m awa red and w hite. T he strin g q u a rte t delighted the audience w ith a special num ber. T h is q u arte t is the pride of C h e m awa and its m usic is alw ays fine and of a h igh grad e. Especial ch o ru s songs had been prepared by th e choir, b u t on account of th e len g th of the program were postponed tor n ex t Sunday evening. T h is closed the 37th anniversary of th e Chem aw a Indian School, and rig h t proud are pupils and em ployes of the w ork being done in all d ep artm en ts. A W ASH IN G TO N B IR T H D A Y PAG EA N T T h e e n tertain m en t given in th e school au d ito riu m on W a sh in g to n ’s B irthday by the n in th grade p u p ils was successful th ro u g h o u t and afforded m uch pleasure and en joym ent to a large audience. T h e play w as well staged and drilled. T h e costum es w ere b ea u ti ful and represented the style w orn d u rin g th e colonial period very m in u tely . R eginald D ow nie, ns W ash in g to n Irv in g , spoke his lines d istin ctly and w ith splendid em phasis, his a p pearance was very dignified, p o rtray in g the ch aracter o f Irving sp len d id ly . T h e solos by Russell and Mae A dam s w ere given w ith m uch feeling and pathos and w ere appreciated by th e audience. F ra n k P eratrovich as Billy, the colored serv an t, m ade the h it of th e even in g . H is in terp retatio n of the p art was fine, using th e negro dialect perfectly, and was a signal for la u g h te r every tim e he m ade his appearance on th e stage. Miss M arie R oberts, teacher of the n in th grade, drilled th e production, and w ith th e class, deserves m uch cred it for its pleasing presentation. In fact, each m em ber of th e class d id his p a rt exceptionally well an d it is hardly fair to m ake p articu lar m ention of any one.
