T h is is quite a respectable age for a school pu b licatio n and in that period T h e A m erican has noted m any changes in and out of the service. Some of these changes have had a direct te a rin g upon th is p u b licatio n , th e resu lt of o u r own in itiatio n , w hile o th er changes have been w ro u g h t in spite of us. W h eth er all of these changes have had the desired effect we will not say. but th is we do affirm: T h a t in every event th ere has been in evi dence an earn est desire to do w hat was best. T he A m erican com es o u t th is issue as a w eekly. It is deem ed foi the best interests of the stu d en t body and those connected w ith th esch o o l th at c u rre n t events at Chem aw a be published at sh o rter intervals th an is afforded by a m o n th ly pu b licatio n . T h e m agazine, as published d u rin g the past four years, proved m ost in terestin g and m ain tain ed a h igh standard for the school. W e do not in ten d to abandon our m agazine and every effort will be m ade to con tin u e the p u b lica tion, but it will be issued at less freq u en t in terv als and perhaps should be considered a q u arte rly . It is our aim to have th e first issue out about C hristm as. W e feel certain th a t th is arran g em en t will be the most satisfactory for our readers and ourselves th a t has yet been adopted at th is school so far as its paper and m agazine are concerned. Mrs. Am v Scott, C arlisle ’95, has b ro u g h t her fif teen year old tw in d au g h ters to Chem aw a from M on tan a. M rs. Scott was very m uch interested in C h e m aw a and is eager to re tu rn hom e and give an e n th u s iastic report of her visit. M rs. Scott is a splendid type of th e progressive, educated Indian w om en. Tw elve Chem aw a stu d e n ts are atten d in g high school in Salem , the w ork ran g in g from th e first year to th e fo u rth . T hose a tten d in g are as follows: F ra n k John son, senior; Florence T hom pson and A nna L oftus, juniors; Elwood T cw n er N ick Orloff, Paul L ip h art, M yra Rauzi and E va W hite, sophom ores; M artha S prague, Rose O ’Brien. Irv in g Shepard and H en ry Davis, freshm en. Football practice is in full sw ay these day s. A bout 50 of our young huskies tu rn ed out and m a terial for a strong team is very m uch in evidence. M r. Saunders is coach and Mr. Jaq u in s m anager. An exhibition line-up was had on S atu rd ay and re sulted in some lively sciim m ages. A n u m h e r of gam es are expected to be scheduled im m ediately. Football enthusiasm is ram p an t. A stu d en t body m eeting was held in the au ditorium last S atu rday n ig h t. M r. Ja q u in s opened the m eeting by statin g its object and requested nom inations foi a stu d e n t body president, secretary, treasu rer and yell leader. T he in stan t response to th e invitation on the part of a dozen young men and women alm ost took th e A m erican re p o rte r’s breath aw ay. N om inations were m ade, anti after a heated cam paign lastin g an h o u r or so, R eginald Downie was elected president; Leona Jo h n , secretary; Irv in g S h e p a rd , treasu rer; N ick Orloff, yell leader. E ach officer m ade a tellin g speech and e n thusiasm for ohl C hem aw a and her stu d e n t body a c tivities was great. School songs and yells w ere given and speeches by various m em bers of the stu d e n t body and visitors made. A heated discussion took place in regard to the am ount to be charged for secu rin g tick ets to all athletic events. F inally a com m ittee was appointed to settle the m itter. A rate of $1.00 for each season ticket has been decided upon.
