As a rew ard for faithful labor in the literary soci­
eties, p u p ils elected by th e faculty will have th eir nam es
inscribed on a roll of honor. T h is honor roll will be
cem ented in th e wall of the assem bly hall.
On W ednesday of the S tate F air w eek, know n as
“ Salem D a y ,” the en tire stu d e n t body and em ployees
took an o u tin g an d sp en t th e day at the F air. A
special tra in was ch artered for th e occasion by w hich
to reach th e F a ir g ro u n d s and re tu rn . T h e organiz: -
tion was so com plete that at lunch tim e, and also at
th e tim e agreed upon to re tu rn , no-one was m issing.
T h is is su rp risin g in th a t th ere w ere 30,000 people at
th e E air an d in spite of th e jam o u r C hem aw a s tu ­
dents obeyed orders and g ath ered at th e appointed
rendezvous p ro m p tly , and not one act of m isconduct
was observed or rep o rted . Good for th e C hem aw a
stu d e n t body!
O u r school ex h ib it at th e O regon S tate F air, held at
Salem from S eptem ber 25th to 30th, was considered
the m ost in te re stin g on display. T h e artistic effect
given th e large booth w ith th e In d ian baskets, N avajo
ru g s, bead and fancy w ork, rendered th e p roducts of
th e farm , g ard en and o rch ard especially attractiv e.
T h is, added to th e canned fru it and the toothsom e a d ­
d ition s m ade daily from th e Dom estic Science cooking'
d ep a rtm en t as well as the various shop productions,
easily m ade th e Chem aw a booth a cen ter. M any th o u s­
ands of v isito rs viewed th e ex h ib it and thereby gained
a hig h er idea of the capability of the In d ia n . T h e force
of em ployes an d pupils co-operated splen d id ly and
m ade it possible for so handsom e an ex h ib it to be
show n.
S un d ay n ig h t chapel services, conducted by S u p e r­
in te n d e n t H all, are looked forw ard to w ith m uch
pleasure by th e stu d e n ts. Last S unday n ig h t the
S u p erin ten d en t talked on the subject of leaks and
w astes in o u r school, and urged th e stu d e n t body to
look upon C hem aw a as th eir school, th eir own p ro p ­
erty , and care for it as such. H e em phasized the
need of econom y not only on account of the m oney
value, but because of th e ch aracter b u ild in g value to
each one w hile here an a also of the need of perm anent
character b u ild in g value after leaving school. H e
urged th e stu d e n ts to start from now on and see to it
th a t each one prevent w aste of tim e and thereby
stren g th en and build up character in directions th at
will be beneficial all th ro u g h life. T h e m usical p ro ­
gram fu rn ish ed by the strin g q u a rte t was fine and
enjoyed bv all.

vegetables have been p u t u p ” at the Chem aw a school
this year. A large force of girls have been alm ost
co n tin u o usly engaged in can n in g as the various p ro d ­
ucts were available, such as straw berries, log an ­
berries, blackberries, rh u b arb , peas, s trin g beans,
plum s, pears, p ru n es, corn, etc. W hen it is rem em ­
bered th a t a sufficiency has been canned to supply a
school of 600 pupils the am ount m ust be very large
indeed.
1 he past three m onths has been a busy tim e
at Chem aw a, and a more w illing lot of children to do
th eir p art cannot be found. In addition to the canned
goods layed aw ay for th e w in ter use, our readers may
be surprised to learn th a t about 28,000 pounds of dried
prunes are now on h an d , having been raised at C h e­
mawa and d ried in th e school d rier. U nquestionably
C hem aw a is a busy place and a producer.
