Wednesday, July 25, 2018 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon 13 entertainment & EVENTS WED...JULY 25 PHOTO BY JERRY BALDOCK Locals gathered for music and a sense of community last week at Village Green Park. THURS...JULY 26 Sisters gathers for Rhythm & Sodg By T. Lee Brown Correspondent Percussion instruments were laid out on bright cloths in a circle on the Village Green. A half moon rose over Jefferson Avenue as people lined up for a country hot dogs and pasta salad. Friends greeted each other and strang- ers made new acquaintances. Led by music therapist Jodi Winnwalker of Earthtones Northwest, people chanted, “Join our circle, join our cir- cle of community.” Unlike a typical music performance, the Rhythm & Song event held last Thursday encouraged everyday pic- nickers and concertgoers to join in. Anyone could pick up a drum or a rattle, and sing or chant with the experienced musicians who led the group. Said Jessica Vitelle, “I came out so my kids could experience music with com- munity, be out with people, and enjoy the summer.” Her son Chris Willard said he came “to have fun” and said he was excited to learn more about percussion. “One of my favorite instruments is drums,” Willard said. “I got one for my eighth birthday.” While Winnwalker led a chant about having wings, turkey vultures and a raven took to the sky overhead. The birds swooped in wind cur- rents as kids swirled across the lawn below, streaming rainbow ribbons. Numerous musicians and dancers shared their art. Harp, shamanic drum, voice, ukulele, hula, African gui- tar, and rhythm games were on offer. Cameron and Tree, new Sisters residents who lead “sound baths” of musi- cal healing, coaxed sensuous thrumming out of a hanging gong and large Tibetan sing- ing bowls. Kirk Olsen played African guitar. The event was presented by Citizens4Community with Sisters Park & Recreation District (SPRD) and Melvin’s by Newport Avenue Market. All performers and organiz- ers donated their time as vol- unteers. Businesses supplied services and supplies at a dis- count or as in-kind donations. Winnwalker said later that Paulina Springs Books loaned 70 chairs at the last minute, and a local artist offered to load them up and bring them over. “That’s an example of how community works,” said Winnwalker, who has lived in Sisters Country for seven years. “I loved that.” Communities rarely sing in perfect harmony. C4C Board President Robyn Holdman spoke of how the Sisters community had been in “discord” two years ago, inspiring the organization’s founding. SPRD Board Chair Jeff Tryens used his time at the microphone to acknowl- edge the district’s recent tumult and invited audience members to ask questions. He then characterized SPRD as the “Sisters Department of Fun,” inspiring a new chant from Winnwalker and participants. The crowd returned to music and dancing.
