From tiny doll quilts to giant king-sized ones, the town of Sisters was an explo- sion of vibrant color. Known today as the largest outdoor quilt show in the world, SOQS, pre- sented by Kaufman Fabric, began in 1975 when Jean Wells Keenan hung her students’ quilts outside her shop on a Saturday in July. That thoughtful action turned into an annual event that now, 43 years later, draws people from all over the world. Every quilt showcased is a journey, each quilt unique to its creator. And quilt styles ranged from colonial to contem- porary. Designs varied from paper sewn to original patterns, from geometric shapes to birds, horses and a photo jour- nal of Paris to vivid scenes of a lakeside view and a winter country home. There were squares with umbrellas and shoes, vintage airplanes, and safari animals. A great deal of effort goes into stag- ing this event. And beginning at the break of dawn on Saturday, 400 volun- teers hung over 1,200 quilts transform- ing Sisters into the largest outdoor quilt show in the world. “Creative Trails” was the theme of this year’s quilt show and of the 2018 See QUILT SHOW on page 31 The Sisters Park & Recreation District Board of Directors voted unani- mously last Friday morning to accept the resignation of SPRD Executive Director Todd Garrett, who had assumed the position in late April. In his resignation let- ter, Garrett cited inability to gain “access to requisite information to perform job duties” as a reason for his resignation. “In addition to inhibiting my abilities to perform req- uisite tasks, the toxic envi- ronment I was thrust into,” Garrett claims, hampered his ability to do the job and left him exposed to profes- sional risk as the executive. He has accepted a position as the city administrator in Ashland, Wisconsin, population 8,200, located on the shore of Lake Superior. Kucera’s son lives in Michigan and, when he was not yet in school, Kucera was able to have him live with him over half the year. Rhys is now in grade school and visits with him are not fre- quent or long enough. Being in Ashland will put Kucera only three hours away from his son. “I want to be able to watch my son grow up,” Kucera explained. “I feel that I am missing out on my son’s life See KUCERA on page 25 Inside... By Jim Yuskavitch Correspondent There’s a proposal afoot to make the entire Metolius River fly fish- ing only. The move is spearheaded by Lake Oswego resident Chris Foster, who has fished the Metolius for decades; he believes that such a change in fishing regulations would better protect the river’s redband trout while putting a big dent in the ongo- ing problem of bull trout poaching. Currently, the entire river is catch- and-release only, and fly fishing only with barbless hooks above Bridge 99. The river is closed to all fishing above Allingham Bridge from November to late May to protect spawning trout, most of which spawn in the upper reach of the Metolius during that time period.
