Wednesday, May 16, 2018 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon 13 Sisters artist Dyrk Godby featured in book on West By Kathryn Godsiff Correspondent Sisters artist Dyrk Godby has had his name linked to some pretty varied activi- ties: champion rodeo rider, Olympic-caliber boxer, horse trainer, singer-songwriter and Western artist. It’s the last gig that recently brought him recog- nition among a cadre of the very best of Western artists celebrating the horse. A just- published book, “Horses in the American West,” includes Godby’s art alongside that of 23 others who paint, pho- tograph, sculpt and draw horses at work and rest in the West. Luminaries such as Tim Cox, David Stoecklein, Veryl Goodnight, Brenda Murphy are featured. All have won accolades for their work. “I’ve admired these artists for years, and seen their work all over,” said Godby. “I’m honored and privileged to be in such company.” Godby’s paintings in the book include a 1998 work titled “Counting ’Em Out,” depicting a cowboy count- ing a herd of Hereford cattle moving through a gateway, his paint horse standing qui- etly and his dog on alert to any cows trying to avoid the gate. This was Godby’s first work to grace a magazine cover. Other selected paint- ings show cowboys and their horses working, competing and contemplating. The book includes a biog- raphy of each artist and nar- rative relating to each piece featured. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the hearts of art- ists devoted to portraying the lived-in and working West, not the romanticized version. Attention to detail is vital to all the artists, down to being aware of the angle of a horse’s ear as he is waiting for a sig- nal from the rider or making sure that the loops in a rope are depicted accurately. The introduction of the book states that it seeks to highlight the work and thoughts of this group of contemporary Western art- ists. Their common humility is a trait shared by those with a deep appreciation for the hard-working Western way of life. Their “great respect for the horse and its central role as a partner in this tradition is seen throughout the book.” “Horses in the American West” is authored by Texas Tech University staffers Heidi Brady and Scott White and published by the Texas A&M University Press. Brady is a professor in the department of ani- mal and food sciences, is involved with thera- peutic riding and ther- apy and teaches courses in equine management, therapeutic riding and horses in world art. White is the director of collections, exhibits and research at the National Ranching Heritage Center at the university.
