14 Wednesday, May 16, 2018 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Doubles team takes second By Rongi Yost Correspondent Sisters’ top doubles team of Rylee Weber and Hawley Harrer took second place at the 4A/3A/2A/1A Special District No. 2 Girls Tennis Championships held at Black Butte Ranch on Thursday, May 10. The duo will advance to the state championships, which will be held at Oregon State University on Friday and Saturday, May 18 and 19. In the semi-finals, Weber and Harrer faced Madras’ Olivera and Olivera, and won with scores of 6-3, 6-4. It rained constantly throughout the match, and steam from evaporation rose from the courts all around the duo. Coach Crystal Tosello said, “The Madras team was very aggressive with big serves, and they poached at the net often. Hawley and Rylee played their game. Rylee’s best shot was her serve; she hit them hard and deep in the service box making them challenging to return. Hawley hit well- placed volleys with finesse. Both hit amazing deep cross- court returns. It was awesome to see the girls win when they have been working so hard all season.” In the finals, Weber and Harrer were defeated 1-6, 4-6, by Lewis and Osuma of Cascade. The Cascade pair were skilled players and Rylee and Hawley didn’t get many games their first set, but they figured out how to adapt to their opponents and made a strong comeback in the sec- ond set. “They (Rylee and Hawley) had long rallies with consis- tent lobs back and forth until someone would go in for the volley put-away shot,” said Tosello. “Rylee and Hawley wowed the spectators with their awesome volleys that were perfectly placed in the angles or at their opponent’s feet. “I’m so proud of how hard these girls have worked throughout the season,” added Tosello. “Every match, they’ve given it their all. They chase down every ball, com- municate well every point, and have become really smart players.” Earlier in the week, on Monday, in round two of dis- trict play, Weber and Harrer got the job done with a 6-1, 6-2 win against Molalla’s No. 3 doubles team, Peeples and Burgil. The pair went on to defeat Francis and Nelson of Philomath, 6-1, 6-1, and with the win advanced to the semi-finals. “Hawley and Rylee were both worn from a long week- end and from the heat during the tournament,” said Tosello. “They didn’t bring tons of energy like they do in most of their matches, but they exerted themselves as much as they needed to, and got the job done. Hawley had amaz- ing serves, and Rylee had some of the most aggressive volleys of the year.” Rheanna Salisbury lost 1-6, 1-6 to Mollie Lewandowski, who Tosello stated is the best player in the district and hasn’t lost a dis- trict match in two years. Tosello said, “Rheanna played amazing against Mollie. It was a close match, with many deuces and long rallies. Rheanna is the only person in the tournament so far to get a couple games off Mollie, and she handled Mollie’s challenging slice shots and net game very well, and gave her back consistent deep ground-strokes.” Hallie Schwartz and Lola Green lost 6-2, 6-0, to the No. 4 seed in the tourna- ment, Cascades’ Mitchell and Wiebanga. Tosello told The Nugget that the duo started the season without ever touching a tennis racket, or knowing the rules of the game, but have used their ath- leticism and competitive spirit to grow into very skilled ten- nis players. “They gave Cascade’s team a challenge they weren’t prepared for, as Hallie and Lola get a racket on even the toughest of shots,” said Tosello. “Although Mitchell a n d Wi e b a n g a p l a y e d well, Hallie and Lola kept many long rallies, and hit skilled volleys, serves, and groundstrokes.” Tosello was pleased with her team and the growth they’ve made over the course of the season. I’m so proud of these ladies and how they played. They’ve all grown tremen- dously this season, and I think we will have a very strong team next year.” Spring Fling The battle lines are being drawn...
