4 Wednesday, June 17, 2015 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Quilts on exhibit at library in July The Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show is showing two quilt exhibits at the Sisters Branch of the Deschutes Public Library for the month of July. Featured at the Sisters Library are a mix of art and contem- porary quilts, some made by nationally recognized quilters and some created by Oregon quilters who used inks to cre- ate photo-like quilts. “MIX: Materials In The Extreme” features 21 small pieces by seven artists. MIX artists developed a series of new works examining the concept of “in the extreme.” Whether it be through use of a single theme or similar technique, the work explores material, shape, or distortion and color “in the extreme.” To further unify the body of work, each piece is rendered at 18 inches square. MIX is a Portland-based group of artists dedicated to the creation of fiber art. Members of this group cre- ate bodies of work for exhibit venues and display. The group meets once a month to cri- tique, challenge, and encour- age one another, while explor- ing the design principles of photo provided MiX: Losli-Britt diane Running Apart. their craft and other art media. Members have used a wide range of techniques in their art including surface design (such as dyeing, printing, painting, screen printing, embroidery, etc.), piecing and appliqué (including fusing), quilting (machine and by hand), and several others. “Painting Quilts with Ink” is an exhibition of quilts made by various Oregon artists who learned the technique from Prineville author, artist, and quilter June Jaeger. Using Tsukineko inks as paints, these five quilt artists used a favor- ite photograph as inspiration to create their own fabric pic- ture. Employing techniques of texture, “dry brush” and inno- vative painting brings these fabric portraits and pictures to life. Finishing and quilting the paintings enhanced the quilts to become unique one-of-a- kind creations. Exhibits will be on display July 1-30 during library hours: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday- Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays. For more informa- tion call 541-312-1070. W ! Hood Ave., Sisters Movie house offers late-night showings As the sun goes down, many shops in Sisters close their doors, leaving locals and tourists with few things to do in the evenings. This summer, those look- ing for something to do after the sidewalks roll up are in luck. Beginning this week, the Sisters Movie House will be open for an additional late showing on Friday nights. “When I first built the Movie House in 2005, I hoped to add something new to the community that would complement the vibrant activ- ity throughout Sisters,” said owner Lisa Clausen. “As the Movie House approaches its 10-year anniversary, we have been re-examining how we fulfill this goal, and thinking of ways to better serve the res- idents of Sisters. Along with our popular ‘Ladies Night Out’ events that began a few months ago, we thought that a later showing during the sum- mer would provide the youth and night-owls of our commu- nity with something to do in the evening.” When i first built the Movie house in 2005, i hoped to add something new to the community that would complement the vibrant activity throughout Sisters. — Lisa Clausen The late showing on Fridays will begin around 9:30 p.m. throughout the summer. Specific film times for each week are available in The Nugget and online at www.sistersmoviehouse.com.
