Wednesday, June 17, 2015 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Council signs off on Creekside fixes By Sue Stafford Correspondent Patrick Davenport, City of Sisters community develop- ment director, reports that the Sisters City Council reviewed the CPAB recommenda- tions for improvements to the Creekside Campground, agree- ing to most of them, including performing a traffic study to modify ingress/egress, and constructing a berm along Locust Street. The proposed berm along Tyee Drive was replaced with enhanced landscape plantings in order to reduce the cost of the project. Davenport reviewed for the parks advisory board a progress draft of the new mas- ter plan for Creekside Park and Campground, including exist- ing conditions and overall goals and objectives for improve- ments. The prioritization of the goals is outlined in the proposed Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) for all the City parks. Davenport advised the board that the overall City Parks Master Plan has to be completed before the CIP goes to Council for their approval. The final draft of the Creekside Park Master Plan will be returned to CPAB for review once the traffic study around the campground is completed and the parks CIP document is approved by City Council. photo by Jodi Schneider McnaMee Art in the Park vendor dave Cretsinger at his Tumbleweeds art booth. Eclectic treasures for visitors By Jodi Schneider McNamee Correspondent Forestry board: keep ground cover By Sue Stafford Correspondent The Urban Forestry Board has instructed the City of Sisters to discontinue its cur- rent practice of removing all ground cover from public treed areas, such as behind the truck scales on the east end of town. City Manager Andrew Gorayeb had directed the pub- lic works department to do the clearing using Deschutes County inmate work crews to create a cleaner look, to reduce fire danger from thrown cigarette butts, and to improve visibility of deer attempting to cross highways. The clearing extends 50 feet in from the edge of the road. Urban Forestry chairman Dave Moyer, who is retired from 42 years with the U.S. Forest Service, elaborated on studies that showed such prac- tices are bad for the health of the forests. “When the ground under the trees is stripped of all vegetation and duff (tree nee- dles, etc.), the healthy growth See TReeS on page 20 Sisters offered sunny skies on Saturday for Art in the Park, an added attraction for visitors to enjoy during rodeo weekend in Sisters. Creekside Park was filled with over 85 vendor booths for folks to take in. Ken and Sandy Ash, first- time vendors from Roseburg, really stood out to the crowd with their unusual birdfeed- ers and flower plates that add charm and color to your garden. “I recycle decorative plates that I buy from just about any- where, and attach them to electrical conduit poles.
