4 Wednesday, February 11, 2015 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Lady Outlaw swimmers Outlaws tame the Lions take first at dual meet By rongi Yost Correspondent By rongi Yost Correspondent The Outlaws matched up against Redmond and Ridgeview on Tuesday, February 3, and the Lady Outlaws came out on top. S i s t ers ’ g i rl s d efeat ed Ridgeview 78-39 and beat Redmond 87-39. Highlights included first-place finishes by Mary Stewart and Emily Christen. Stewart finished first in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 29.14 and also took top honors in the 100-meter but- terfly with a time of 1:14.14. Christen finished first in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:18.08. Several other Lady Outlaws finished in the top five. Madelyn Zadow took second in the 100-meter free- style with a time of 1:13.16. Christen finished at 30.41 in the 50-meter freestyle for a second-place finish. Brooke Knirk took fifth in the same event with a time of 31.89. In the 100-meter back- stroke, Zadow finished third at 1:21.08, and Hawley Harrer took fifth at 1:33.50. Christen, Harrer, Zadow, and Stewart took first place in the 200-meter freestyle relay with a finish time of 2:02.95. In the 400-meter freestyle relay (Christen, Harrer, Zadow and Stewart) took first place with a time of 4:49.22. On the boys’ side, Jonathan Luz and Shawn Horton took first and second respectively in the 100-meter butterfly. Luz finished with a time of 1:15.64, and Horton was close behind with a time of 1:15.96. The 400-meter freestyle relay team of Horton, Cyrus Alexander, Will Werts and Luz took second with a time of 4:41.12. Swimmers used their last league meet of the season to prepare for the district cham- pionships, which will be held in Albany on Friday and Saturday, February 13-14. The boys basketball team defeated Cottage Grove 48-38 at home on Friday, February 6, and pushed their league record to 5-1. Although they are small in stature, the Lions boast a strong dribble-drive offense and are very proficient shoot- ing the three-pointer and get- ting to the rim. Sisters was able to extend pressure and throw the Lions off their offensive game. It was a tight start and at the close of the first quarter Sisters held a one-point lead at 9-8. The second quarter was also close, but just before the half, Hayes Moore hit a huge three-pointer that gave the Outlaws momentum. At the half, Sisters held a 21-17 advantage. Sisters’ defense held strong and the offense geared up in the second half. The Tigers ran a compact zone- defense and the Outlaws struggled a bit with spac- ing. Tysen Gill and Connor Schaab did a nice job inside, and Justin Harrer and Isaac Mackenzie were tough defen- sively and at the high-posts. Sisters extended their lead and closed out the third on top at 35-26. Year-round FIREWOOD SALES Sisters was up by 16 twice in the final period, but CG hit enough of their shots to nar- row the gap. When the final buzzer sounded the Outlaws had bested the Lions by 10. Steen Johnson paced the Outlaws with 13 points. Tysen Gill scored 10 points, Justin Harrer tallied six, and Hayes Moore added five. Harrer told The Nugget he felt the Outlaws executed well. The Outlaws were to play at Sweet Home on Tuesday, February 10. Sisters will wrap up their week with a road game at Junction City on Friday, February 13.
