Wednesday, February 11, 2015 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Sisters restaurant boosts local nonprofits By Sue Stafford Correspondent Dine for a Cause is a new program being offered by The Open Door wine bar and bis- tro and the Rickards family, as a way to give back to the community. Each month a different non- profit organization will be fea- tured and receive 10 percent of the gross receipts for every Tuesday of the month. By using the gross receipts, both the Rickards and the patrons are contributing. Dan and Julia Rickards have lived, worked and raised their family in Sisters for 20 years. Dan is a local artist, well-known for his landscape and wildlife paintings. Three years ago, the Rickards moved their gallery to the southwest corner of Hood and Oak, See The opeN door on page 19 Science Fair expands roster of exhibitors The upcoming Sisters Science Fair, scheduled for February 21, noon to 4 p.m. at Sisters High School, has expanded its out-of-district exhibitors this year. In addition to student pre- sentations and competitions, the Science Fair will feature exhibitors from Central Ore- gon to pique scientific interest. The Central Oregon Rocket Club will display rockets, and members will explain the ins and outs of rocket science to anyone who asks “How?” “What?” “Why?” Spectators can then take their newfound knowledge outside at 1 and 3 p.m. to watch club members launch rockets on the high school front lawn. Sisters company ENERGY- neering Solutions, Inc. will display some of their projects and offer some 3-D printer displays. Another Sisters com- pany, MOHR Solutions, will be on hand to talk about their innovative power and telecom- munications firm. St. Charles Education and Cascades East will be bring- ing “Carl,” their interactive mannequin, to teach basic life support. Chimps, Inc. wildlife sanc- tuary and USFS Trout Unlim- ited represent the science of animals. Last year’s trout stream was extremely popu- lar, and Trout Unlimited will be bringing it back with even more hands-on instruction. Another popular exhibit at previous fairs has been the planetarium where you can view the night sky from inside the dome. Sisters Astronomy Club and Oregon Observatory at Sunriver will be on hand to answer questions. photo provided a crew from Sisters helped build a home in Kyrgyzstan — and they’re making plans to go again. Sisters Habitat builds in Kyrgyzstan In September 2014, Sisters Habitat for Humanity sent a team of four to work with Habitat for Humanity International to complete a home-building project in the village of Barskoon, Kyrgyzstan. The team, known as “Small But Mighty,” con- sisted of Jack and MaryAnne McDonnell, Kevin Neary, all Sisters residents, and Gus Bigos, Neary’s brother-in- law from Colorado. During the two-week build, the last of the season in Barskoon, the team was able to complete the work that can be done by volunteers and turn the project over to local professionals to fin- ish the home for a family of four. On Tuesday, February 17, Jack and MaryAnne will give a slideshow and pre- sentation about the build, and the beautiful country of Kyrgyzstan, known as “the Switzerland of Central Asia.” The presentation will take place at Sisters City Hall at 7 p.m. The McDonnells found this trip to be such a reward- ing and fulfilling experi- ence that they are planning to return to Kyrgyzstan in September 2015 for another Habitat for Humanity International build. Sisters Habitat for Humanity is seeking adven- turous volunteers to join the McDonnells. No build- ing experience is required, only a desire to help a fam- ily in need of a decent home while learning about each other’s cultures in the process.
