Iron sulphide hIho occurs in nature- and is known ns trollito, but, for our purposo wo do not consider It as found In Its na tive state. When commercial llme- Bttlphur solution is added to a solu tion of Iron sulphate (KpS04), or copporas, tho blnrk ferrous sulphide Is precipitated, $ind, sinco llme-sul- ., plmr solution Is compoaed chiefly . of polysulphldes of calcium, namely, , phnla-sulphldo (CaSIi), and tctrn-sul- phlde (CaSI), Ihero is, therefore, an excess or Biilphur which Ib thrown down In tho reaction, lloth the free sulphur and iron sulphide which Is formed by tho copibl nation of the llmo-Kulphur and tho copporas, are in a very finely divided floculeut form and tho precipitated sulphur may be very largely responsible for tho fun gicidal properties of this mixture. In addition to tho fen our sulphldo (FoS) and free sulphur (S), there Is produced a largo amount of calcium sulphate (CuSOl) or gypsum, and thcro aro also present other com pounds, notably calcium thlo-sul-pliuto (CaS20!i), which has been pre viously mentioned in discussing tho reaction which takes place when the pontn-Biilphido of calcium breaks down. Ah soon aB tho black floculeut precipitate settles, tho supernatent liquid Is poured off, and. by doing so, the soluble polyaulphides and tlilii BtilphatcB aro removed and also, to Bomo extent, tho partly solublo cal cium sulphate. Tho black picclpl tuto Is then used to Bpray upon the trees by adding to It Hiifflclent water to keep It In suspension by good ngl tatlon tho specific fungous which this spray Is used Is discussed, more will bo given about It, especially tho manner of making It up and the strength which Is to bo used In apply ing It to tho trees. Another valuable compound of sul phur has boon used aH a remedy for mildew, especially the mildew of the goosobory. This Is potassium sul phide (K-'S) or what Is commonly However, we do not find tbnt this loosening process always takes place. The active killing agents, therefore, are really the free sulphur, tho thlo-sul-phate (so long as it remains.) and tho sulphite. Tho fact that this breaking down process takes place, causing tho deposition of free sulphur to tnke place, Is a very good rea son why llmo-sulphur does not stick woll on the trees during tho wet sea son, since the freo sulphur Is washed away, and wo also know that the penla-Bulphide, tho tetra-sulphlde and the thio-sulphate are all soluble. Experiments have shown that If very heavy rains follow tho spraying of lime-sulphur, tho effects of the Bpray are never so good. This Is why tho writer advises very strongly against lime-sulphur as a remedy for anthraruoBo of tho annle, and ad vises Bordeaux Instead, tho Hor rleaux being much moro Insolublo and sticking longor and better to tho trees. The writer docs not say, how ever, that llnie-sulphur Is not moro or less effective in preventing this dis ease, but It Is certainly less effective than Bordeaux. This ban been proven by experiments. Tho same 1h truo of tho peach blight or shot-holo dis ease, Hordoaux spraying being much moro efrectlvo than lime-sulphur where rains aro heavy and washing. It Is easily seen that after tho lime Hiilphur wash has been applied, Its efficiency would bo reduced Just In proportion to tho amount or tblo-sul-phate, penta-sulphldo and sulphite washed away. It has been suggested that tho efficiency of tho llmo-sul- PORTLAND, Or., Fob. 17.
