ra !-fo gntta gionmto ' ASTOKIA, OREGON: TUESDAY .NOVEMBER 12. 1889. ""Westward the Star of Empire wends its way." "Washington, the farthest west of the big four, was the last to be admitted. Wiikn Oregon was admitted it took a mouth to know it here. Yesterday, when Washington was admitted, it onlvtobka minute. Speaking of au approaching wed ding, a Seattle" paper says: "It will bo consummated in a very quiet way." "Well we should hope so. AiiraiiXUM is getting cheaper. Not long ago it was $8 a pound; now it can be bought for $2. It is the com ing metal and all that delays its ad vent is its high price. John.T. Astor who is reported en gaged to Mrs. Bowler, a Cincinnati widow, is G8 years old. but is said to be still handsome and vigorous. How could he be otherwise when he is worth $150,000,000? With the exception of the little narrow strip of the panhandle of Idaho, there is now a continuous line of states along the northern boundary of our country. There is also a con tinuous girdle of railroad all along the border north, ea3t, south and west, including all the coasts. Ouit compliments to the state of "Washington, the youngest born of Uncle Sam's numerous family: may she grow in grace and .wealth as she grows in stature, and may the flag that floats above her come rounding jnlo porl through every succeeding year with not a stripe torn, nor a star missing. James Edwakd CAinoux, cousin and brother-in-law of John C. Cal houn, died October 31st at his home in Abbeville, South Carolina, aged 93 years. lie entered the naval service in 1S16 aud resigned in 1S3& At the lime or his death he was the largest land-owner in the state, with a home stead of 25,000 acres of rich savanna lands" and 103,000 acres of mountain land in Pickens and Oconee counties. For the last fiftj years he led the life of a hermit, devoting himself exclus ively to the increase of his estate. In 1830 the emigration from the Latin countries of Europe was only 80,000, and nearly all the emigrants went to Anglo-Saxon countries. In 18SG the Latin emigration had risen to 293,6MS, and was close upon the heels of the emigration from German and British countries, which was 378113. The presumption that these Latin emigrants would prefer the Latin countries of South America to the British couniries of the north, is sup ported by the fact that the Argentine Bepublic, Brazil and Uruguay in 1S88 received 301,87G immigrants. The United States received 523.019 immi grants in the same year, but it isevi- dent that they are being rapidly over taken by their southern -rivals. Eveky city is judged by its local paper. Flaming advertisements and write-ups in distant papers have too often been resorted to by ambitious towns in recent years. These write ups no longer carry conviction. The public looks upon them in the light of so-many-cents-per-line-bombast. The local paper gives the current events of the day and its advertising columns arc a fair index to the busi ness prosperity of the city or locality in which they are published. Theo retically, the people delight in being duped; practically, the people ar e too intelligent for such transparent methods. Consenting, they refuse to believe. A well-conducted local paper commands respect, tenches truth and inspires conviction. QK TOGIT THE IVROXa 5IEDICIXK. Robert Stewart, of Pctaluma, recently had a queer experience, lie writes: "CarLanclc aud boils afflicted my face and neck lor weeks. Finally I procured a bottle of ono of tho leading sarsaparillas. To my curpriso it made matters worse. This made iso lose faith in sareaparillas, but seeing a statement that Joy's YcsC-table Sarsaparilla dried up boils and face eruptions instead of forcing more out as tho potash sarsaparillas do, I boupht a bottle. Baltimore, Nov. 1L Twelve hun dred delegates to the first congress of Catholic laymen, of the United, States were called to order shortly "before noon to-day by "W. J. Onahan, of Chi cago. Every seat in" the hall was filled and the galleries were crowded. Arch bishop Ireland briefly invoked a di vine blessing and in a few remarks introduced Carroll as temporary chairman. When he mentioned the name of Pope Leo, instantly there was hand clapping and the cheering soon growing into tumultuous enthusiasm The scene was a notable one as the delegate swung hats and shouted a greeting to the Boman pontiff. The following cable from Borne was read: "Cardinal Qibbons, Baltimere: Having made known to the holy father the expression and devotion conveyed to him on the part of the Catholic congress to be held in Baltimore his holiness graciously bids me say that he most affectionately imparts his blessings to all members." Daniel Dougherty, of New York was invited by the chairman to address the congress pending the appoint ment of committees. A. L, Maxwell, of tho O. B. & N. Co., and C. C. Crane, local representative of the Vanderbilt system. JUDGE DEADr RETURNS. Judge Matthew P. Deady has re turned from the east, where he has been dividing his time between New York and Washington as well as other cities, seeking recreation in conse quence of his recent illness. TIIE EVERLASTING GIBBS. There are many reasons leading the officers here to believe that the col ored man recently arrested in Yreka is H. C. Gibbs, the murderer of young James McDervitt Chief deputy sher iff "Withercll is in receipt of a tele gram from sheriff Moxey, of Siskiyou, county, CaL, in which he jfives a" de scription of the captive which tallies in almost every respect with Gibb's ap pearance excepting height, but thnl discrepancy is a slight one. Chief de tective Gritzmacher who saw a tele graphic description of the Yreka pris oner this morning, states there is a strong probability that he is the fugi tive murderer. At anv event, the in teresting question will be settled in a day or two. TIIECRONIN CASE. CniCAGO, Nov". 11. In the Cronin case this morning ten witnesses were introduced who testified that Kuntz last spring went under the name of Kaiser; other witnesses testified to acts showing intimacy between Kuntz aud Coughill, and Kuntz and O'Sulli van. Gus Kare, a tinner testified to having soldered up a galvanized iron box 14x26 inches for Burke two days after the murder. Burke objected to the witness removing the cord from the box which held the top on. In the course of the conversation Burke said Cronin was a spy and ought to be killed. "What Some of the Others Say. The man with an item is always welcome in a newspaper office, and no matter where he gels or what chair he occupies, he is never in the way. He is almost as welcome as the man who CDmcs to pay money. East Wash in u Ionian. The court at the session just closed allowed a bill of S328.80 for stationery and blanks purchased of Geo. D. Bar nard & Co., we believe, a Chicago firm. "We do not blame the court for allow ing tho bill; but we do not think the officials are doing right in sending away for letterheads and blanks when they can be procured at home. "We believe in protection first, last cnl all the time, and. think that the printers of The Dalles should not be forced to pay for work which they can do them selves. There are three printing offices in Tho Dalles which are I rying to build up the city and surrounding country by inducing immigration and capital to locate here, and they should at least receive the patronage of county officials. If they donor, as a matter of self-protection, they must support only such men as will support homo industries, whether they bo Democrats or Republicans. This is simply what any business man would do under the same circumstances, and newspapers must be conducted on a business basis or they will become bankrupt The Balles Times Moun taineer. . . . Catarrh s a constitutional and not a local disease, and therefore it cannot he cored by local ap plications. It requires a constitutional rem Bdy like Hood's Sarsaparilla, which, worklnj throngh the blood, eradicates the lmpurlrj which causes and promotes the disease, and Catarrh effects a permanent cure.
