Oiraia s:?a iu the Story of-a Swis? Wife's j tJCUUll XU1 a. uucuuuu- A case of mistaken identity, in volving elements of dramatic interest sufficient to make the fortune of a sensational novel,, has just occurred in Switzerland. A young couple, named Favre, belonging to the work ing class, had lived happily together for some years at Nanchatel, whan her husband a working mason, be gan to give way to habits of drinking, Efforts ,were made to reclaim him, nud h became an abstainer for a time. Some mouths ago, however, he broke out again and left bis home. His wife bad heard nothing of him for three montbs, when one night she was awakened by a voice calling her repeatedlv from the street outside, and which she felt was that of her husband. She rose, dressed and went into the street, but found no one. A few days afterwards she read an account iii the newspapers of a j man who had committed suicide on i the railway at a small village near Balfi. From the description 01 mm she suspected it might be her missing husband, and became full of the idea that the voice she had heard was a communication from him at the mo ment of his death. She was corrob orated in her belief by learning, ne the result of inquiries, that ho had made application for work at a neigh boring quarry, but, being in drink at the time, had been roughly refused by tbe foreman. Tho body bad now for some time been interred, but, in order to put an end to her sus pense, the poor woman, having got to gether u little money, started off with the determination to have the body disintered. She reached the village, and, after some delay, secured per mission to open the grave. With two or three men as assistants she set to work. When the coffin was opened, the effluvium was so terrible that her companions ran, and left her alone with her dead. For twenty minutes unaided, she pursued her ghastly task. The body had been decapitated by the train, and the head, horribly mutilated, was wrapped by itself in a cloth. She uncovered it, and recog nized it by the teeth. One of the stockings also she knew again from having meuded it with a particular kind of worsted. Her worst fears thus confirmed, she returned home in the depths of sorrow. The aged mother of the man was informed of the identification, and mourning was being prepared for tho whole family, when the crowning act of the drama was furnished by a letter which has been just received from Favre him self, announcing that ho is at Winter ther alive and well! Tho wife had, after all, identified the wrong raau! Who it is that actually lies in that lonely grave no oue knows. What would not Wilkie Colling hav' made out of that midnight voice, the grave yard vigil, aud the extraordinary de nonment!. Workin? People are often too ill to labor, but they havn't time to take medicine and lay off. Simmons Liver Regulator can be taken without causing any loss of time, and the system will be built up and invig orated by it. It has no equal as a prepar atory medicine, and can be safely used when a doctor cannot be called in. In nil common diseases it will, unassisted bv any other medicine, effect a speedy cure. The canneries have all shut down and the numerous fishermen are now enjoying the fruits of their labor. A west Seat tleite said of the Indian fish ermen over there: ''They are all drunk. They made plenty of money and are now enjoying it." It is said that the earnings of those Indian fishermen run as high as $2,300, in one case, and that the averago for two month's work has been about 81,000 or $1,500. Seattle Times. A Rad Choice of Mothers. The small boy had had a fight with another small boy. In youth we make up our quarrels easily, and a blow on the nose heals much more easily than a stinging word in later years. Quick to enjoy, quick to in jure, quick to forget pleasure, quick to forget injuries in our childhood, we grow slower in all with age, vet per haps the value of everything does not change, only our capacity to retain feeling. This small boy had had a fight and his mother had punished him. lie was a boy; his mother was a kiud of grown up girl and could not be expected to understand or sympa thize with the manlv art of selfde fense. But he got it all the same, and when the round was over he stood up in the corner with his knuckles stuck in his tear-filled eyes. '"Well," he said between some severe sobs, "well, I was a fool to get you for a mother wIipu I was born." The Fruit of Violence. In no case is the folly of violenco in medi cation moro conspicuously shown by its fruit than in tho effect upon tho intestines of ox- cessivo purgation. The stomach and bowels aro first painfully griped, then tho latter is copiously, suddenly and repeatedly evacu ated. This is far beyond tho necessities of tho case, most unnatural, oxcesssvely debili tating. Tho organs aro incapacitated from resuming their function with normal modor-v ation. An astringent is resorted to which re duces them to their formor condition of in action. To this monstrous and harmful ab surdity, Hostettor's Stomach Litters is tho happy alternative. It relaxes gently, natur ally, sufficiently, it diverts bilo from th blood into its proper channel, it insures healthful digestio and complete assimilation. It is a comploto defense against malaria, conquers rheumatism, neuralgia, nervousness, Kidnoy and bladder trouble. Lawyer Bowman, who was shot and killed in St. Lonis a few days since, two years offered a life insurance company 2,700 as first payment on a S25.000 ten year endowment policy, but the offer was declined. When a life insurance company refuses to write a policy on a man's life on tho grounds as in this case that he has too many enemies, it is about time for the man to commence seeking a reconciliation or else let a contract for his coffin. The first tinplate to .be made com plete in this country for the past twentv veara or more is now being manufactured at the Exposition," says the Pittsburg Dispatch (October 2." "Yesterday the plant was put in oper ation, and the law-makers of the nation will now have a practical dem onstration that tinplate cau be made iu this country. The plant at the Exposition is in the west end of the building, and was established by the America Tinned Plate association. The object of the establishment of the plant in Pittsburg is to awaken the interest of the public in the matter and practically demonstrate that tin plates can be made here as well as anywhere else in the world. The plant was started yesterday afternoon, and will be under the charge of John D. and Daniel Morgan, two experi enced tinplate workers. The block iron or steel plates from which the tin is made are manufactured iu the rolling mills in this city. It is first pickled in diluted sulphuric acid in order to take off the oxide which accumulates in the annealing process. After doing this it appears as a white sheet. It is then rinsed and washed to take off the acid. The block is then bathed in palm oil and soaked for a few min utes. This makes it ready for the tin-pot, when the plate gets the actual 'tinning.' It is then laid on the wash man's plate and afterward put in the washpot, containing a high grade of refined tin. After that the block is polished with a hempen brush and lowered into another bath of palm oil. It is then rolled through fivo highly polished rolls, and afterward cooled off. It is then placed in a box of bran, and from there goes into a box of middlings, where it is cleaned. The plate is laid on a table and pol ished with a sheepskin. Tho tin is then branded according to its quality. The defective material is called water plate. "V. C. Crpnemeyer, secretary of the association, stated that the pro cess they had i3 better than the meth od of making the plates in England. There they 'llux' them, and this often leaves impurities under the surface of the tin coating. These defects are known as pin holes. The tin made yesterday (October 1) could be bent and twisted in every way, but the coating would not crack or come off." A Shark's Hard Fisht For Life. .Tames Potts, in writing to a friend, sends the following account of his thrilling experience with a shark re cently in Esquimalt harbor, British Columbia. lie says: ''At about G o'clock on Friday morn ing, white stauding on the edge of a lighter, I observed a large shark ap proaching, as it swam up alongside I threw an axe at it, striking it iu the back and inllictiug a deep wound. In its blind fury, lashing about with pain, it dashed itself upon the beach. 1 called to my wife to bring another ax, and ran to where the huge fish was straggling. Before I could reach the spot, however, the shark had got afloat again. Armed with an an ax I waded into the water, when the monster came straight at me, turning over on its back ready to seize me. I watched my opportunity, aud as the fish came near enough I drove the ax with my whole strength into its head. The second blow caused the shark to retire in haste, and it swam out into the bay again, but soon re turned, evidentlv with the intention of having another try at me. I had waded into the water waist deep, and planted myself firmly against a large rock to wait his approach. As it came up I threw the axe and again was lucky in inflicting a deep wound, this time in the monster's side. In stead of .retreating this time the shark turned over, opened its jaws, and came straight for me. My wife had promptly supplied me with a third axe, and as the. shark swam close I dealt blow after blow on his head, the keen blade sinking to the bone at every stroke. I sprang ashore, caught up a boat-hook, and, with my wife's assistance, got the fish upon the beach, when I soon ended its life. After it was dead we measured it, and found it to be 12 feet long and two feet and six inches across the middle. On opening it I found several salmon, a large fish-hook, and several stones in its stomach." Bheumatism aud catarrh, caused by impoverished blond, cured by Ayer's Sarsaparilla.
