San Pbakcisco, Sept. 22. The steamer, Haytien Republic, arrived from the Kodiac islands, Alaska, last night, with about 200 passengers, and a cargo of s almon. Among the pas sengers were four United States com missioners, who are to make a report to the United States-government on the condition of the salmon fisheries in Alaska. This commission ap pointed by the United States fish commissioner, consists of Thomas H. Bean, of Washington, D. C; Living ston Stone, Oregon; Franklin Booth, of Berkeley, and Bobert Lewis, of Washington. Commissioner Stone said: "A brief report of our investigations will be made to congress in December, and a full report next June. We originally intended to go as far north as Behring sea, and Cook's inlet, but the lateness of the season prevented us from going beyond tlig Kodiak islands. On these islands, however, we made a very thorough examina tion, with surprising results. We visited every part of the islands, aud made careful inquiries into the con dition of the fisheries. The number of salmon taken up there is simply astonishing. In Carlook river, which is a stream about sixty feet wide and twenty-five miles in length, over 153, 000 salmon were caught in a single day soon after our arrival. "Although the country is wholly nusettled there are several millions of dollars invested in the salmon trade there, and the business is very profitable. There are eight canning companies on the islands, nearly all of them Sau Francisco concerns. We saw 20,000 salmon taken in one haul. I am told that the Carlock company cleared 390,000 in business last year. "What will be the nature of our report to the government?" "We will eay that too many salmon are beiug caught. If the present amount of fishing bo continued and tho same methods be used the salmon will soon be completely exterminated in the best aud longest rivers on the Kodiak islands. My personal work was tho selection of a suitable site for a station at which to breed salmon. I found an excellent place on the Litsic river. "We will report two methods by which the salmon fisheries may be preserved, and protected. First by restricting the packing companies a3 to the extent of their catches, and second, to hatch salmon by artificial methods. Either of these plans will solve the question and protect ihe fish eries. Most of the canning factories are located at the mouth of the Car lock river, which I think is the most wonderful stream in tho world. Millions of salmon in the narrow run are unaccounted for." Commissioner Stone left io-nighl for his post at tho government fishing station, at Clack amas, Or. The commission will meet in No vember to prepare its report which will be made public soon after it reaches the hands of President Har- CAUTIOK TO MOTHERS, .
