ZZS : tfum&BamBBemuseam Sfa MH &Mtito& ASTORIA. OBEGON: FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 21, 18fi9. Do Hifib Friees of Reallfctate Obstrafct' The Growth ota.ity?" SI 1 A very short examination of such places as Los Angeles, Tacoma, Seat tle, etc, -will show that in cities where high prices of real estate prevail, they stimulate rather than retard a city's growth. The Teal estate . value becomes the basis from which 'the larger growth starts, enabling real estate owners who wish to improve their property, to ob tain money for this purpose. The rapidity with which such places as Seattle and Spokane Ealls secure money for rebuilding, also, means that their high real estate values en able the property owners to get capi tal readily for such purposes. It is this, and not any sentimental "pluck" that makes such rebuilding possible; and it is based on purely cold blooded business principles ana common sense. When Astoria's "real estate values are a half dozen times what they now are, the present " owners in stead of having to retire before in coming capital and sell out, as a con dition of the city's growth, can bor row that capital and themselves get the benefits of the city's growth Just as a local subscription to a railroad of one tenth its cost will secure outside capital for the other nineifemths, so a high local valuation of real estate will bring a much larger amout of outside capital for improvement, provided real estate can readily find purchas ers at the figures at which it is held. The absurd flings that are made by the proprietors of some papers at owners who have foresight to see As toria's future, indicate rather a de sire on the part of the "bare backs" who do not own enough real estate to transfer some of the moss to their own backs; and if they were able they would very gladly figure in the role which they now pretend to decry. No -owner is likely to be so foolish as to transfer to number two hisPreal estate merely from a general desire to see Astoria go forward, when the chances are that number two will merely con tinue number one's policy and reap the harvest himself. The sooner all sentimental twaddle is dropped from business matters, the better. The reason why that ninety-nine out of a hundred landowners desire Astoria to grow is that their own interests may be advanced. When any; individual owner can be convinced that his in terests will be so advanced, he will make a sale, and probably, aiot until then. Angry criticisms will not help the city, but will rather stir" up enmi ties and retard harmonious Astoria. A CALIFORNIA SENSATION. Fetaluma Courier. Itls reported thRtthOE&lesofthe"CaifomI Bemedy," Joy'a Vegetable Sanutparllla, have grown within a few mouths tllltfcey are novr really sensational. Tho way the fame of thU production has spread is simply marvelous. 81z mouths ago It was unknown. To-day It la all over tho country. It is authoritatively stated that they have been actually girlag it away in San Francisco to people afflicted with dyspepsia, sick headaches, indigestion and liver troubles, not to be paid for unless it cured. Such practical tests are BOjSlartllngly convincing as to be almost sensational K It Li stated that two of tho active principles of taa new remedy belong to the vegetable kingdom of California and are so well known to us all under common names that it would surprise us if told them. But wo arc not surprisfid at anything Californlan, and this recent discoTi try of the new medicinal virtues of its vegeta tie kingdom is but another instanQft of th& astonishing possibilities of a sollimffcitoate like ours.
